23-Year-Old Touches Seve’s Milestone

Dec 01, 2025 | Edition #232
👋 Hey Golf Fans,
Not every 23-year-old gets a chance to rub shoulders with Seve Ballesteros. David Puig took his shot. Now his name is engraved on a trophy alongside Seve. We’ll talk more about that, throw the spotlight on a hilarious gaffe, Min Woo Lee’s fan moment, and share snippets from other International Tours today.
Let’s get started…

Destiny

Spanish youngster David Puig strung together a stellar final-round 66 to win the Australian PGA Championship. He started Sunday tied for the lead with Ricardo Gouveia and Anthony Quayle. But after birdieing three of the first four holes, he pulled away from a pack of 31 players within six shots of the lead.
Puig again birdied the 8th, the 13th, and saved par at 14 to keep Wenyi Ding at bay despite the Chinese pro’s late surge on the back nine. Finally, on the 18th, the 23-year-old two-putted for par to claim a two-shot victory over Ding.
Puig became the first Spaniard to lift the Joe Kirkwood Cup after Seve Ballesteros did in 1981. Look at this side-by-side comparison of Puig & Ballesteros with the Kirkwood Cup raised high.
Not the only feat the 23-year-old achieved. Puig also
Became the ninth overseas player to claim the title, first since 2016.
Won his first DPWT title; third overall after turning pro.
Climbed to No.112 in OWGR.
Add to that the AUD $403,750 (around USD $263K) check, and you can safely say Puig’s week has been pretty sweet. But don’t let that overshadow his rise. Puig dropped out of Arizona State before his senior year in 2022 to join LIV Golf, becoming the first college golfer to do so.
The Spaniard has three top-fives in LIV Golf this year. But he has also taken up the DPWT membership after paying all the fines. And now he has a title in his first tournament as a Tour member. Auspicious beginning.

Goofs and Glory

Aside from Puig making history, here are the three best moments from the Royal Queensland.
Floored: Min Woo Lee made a kid’s day (probably the month, and year too) with one shot. The PGA Tour winner hit a stinger through a tiny tunnel between two trees. Just how good was it? TV cameras caught a young spectator’s reaction to it, and we can’t stop watching it. Check out the ridiculous shot and the kid’s “can’t-believe-he-did-this” reaction here.
Mortifying: Sebastian Garcia hoped to wow everyone with a flop shot at the Australian PGA Championship. On the 15th, facing a steep green, he went for it. And bungled it. The ball soared... then rolled right back to near where he was standing. You thought that was the worst part? Well, watch what happened next, and you will feel bad for him, too.
Box office: Third round. 17th hole. Daniel Hillier had a 10-foot par putt to stay in contention. The crowd spontaneously belted out Neil Diamond’s ‘Sweeeeet Caroline.’ Well, Hillier turned to the crowd. Raised his putter and did something no one expected him to do. We present you the most wholesome crowd moment of the week year.

Around the World

Golf was in action not just in Australia last week. Here are three winning snapshots from Europe, Africa, and Asia.
Ladies European Tour: French golfer Nastasia Nadaud captured her maiden title with 16-under-par at the Andalucía Costa del Sol Open de España. Nadaud finished with a par on the 18th hole to win by four shots. She was swarmed by young fans, who almost dragged her away from her mom, as you can see here. Meanwhile, Singapore’s Shannon Tan claimed the season-long Order of Merit, becoming the first Singaporean to achieve that feat.
Sunshine Tour: Deon Germishuys clinched the 90th Fitch and Leedes PGA Championship with a steady 14-under 274. His final round 69 kept him just one shot ahead of Samuel Simpson and Hennie du Plessis. Now Deon’s name will sit alongside legends like Gary Player, Nick Price, and Ernie Els on the trophy. Sweet. But definitely not as sweet as this champagne shower that followed the win.
Asian Tour: Thailand’s Poosit Supupramai sank a stunning birdie on the par-4 18th for 18-under to win the inaugural Bharath Classic Gujarat. Korea’s Wooyoung Cho birdied the last two to narrow the gap. But not enough. Poosit nabbed his first Asian Tour title, a one-year exemption on the Tour, and introduced his wife and child to the world in this heartfelt video call.

‘Flop’ Art

Sebastian Garcia’s screw-up proved that it’s difficult to nail a flop shot. But pros like Rory McIlroy have it down cold — remember this filthy-good flop shot hole-out made the crowd go nuts? The Ulsterman and his coach, Michael Bannon, broke down the fundamentals. Here are three key points:
Setup: Position the ball farther forward in your stance while keeping the shaft angle close to 90 degrees. Open the face wide to engage the bounce when the club releases under the ball.
Weight: Put the pressure on your lead leg with your sternum over the ball. Open the lead foot slightly. The key is less lateral movement and more body rotation.
Swing: Release the trailing hand underneath the golf ball to ensure the clubface returns to the same position it was at address. Notice carefully how McIlroy does it in the tutorial below.
Good technique and an awful lot of practice are needed to master this. You can also pair these fundamentals with Rickie Fowler’s flop shot technique, as explained below.
