A Major With No Favorites

June 19, 2025 | Edition #156

 👋 Hey Golf Fans,

Happy Juneteenth. And while we remember our history today, for golf, it’s also a day of firsts that feel decades in the making. Texas is finally hosting its first women's major championship. On the other side, the PGA Tour has crowned its new leader. More on both, and a truth you need to know about the score you’re shooting in today’s edition. Let's dive in...

Hanse’s Frankenstein

Texas is getting its major championship swagger back. The KPMG Women's PGA Championship is in the Lone Star State for the first time ever. And is there a better host than Fields Ranch East? You’re probably thinking ‘yes’, but don’t be fooled.

This course is a monster designed by the very same guy that renovated Oakmont for the U.S. Open and made sure only one man finished under par last week.

Gil Hanse.

Fields Ranch East is one of Hanse's original creations. A 6,604-yard course that (sometimes) rewards the brave and (always) punishes the scared. Panther Creek snakes through half the holes, just waiting to swallow golf balls. One small miss-hit can leave you stuck with a horrible lie in a bunker, too. Watch Grace Charis find that out the hard way here.

There’s also some serious money on the line this week. A record-tying $12 million purse with $1.8 million waiting for Sunday's winner. The field? 156 ‘stacked’ spots, which include 12 former champions and every single pro from the world's top 100. That’s not even the best part, though. Nobody has won twice on the LPGA this season, which makes this the most wide-open major chase we've seen in years.

Nelly Korda leads the star-studded field. Last season, by this time, she had 6 wins. This year, she’s still looking for her first. Her runner-up at the U.S. Women's Open shows she's knocking on the door… but the likes of 22-year-old Jeeno Thitikul and 3-time major champ Lydia Ko will do anything to keep that door from being opened.

Then there’s also the defending champion Amy Yang, the in-form Maja Stark, and World No. 4 Ruoning Yin, with 150 others just waiting to grab the spotlight. It’s no doubt going to be a major for the ages!

Rolapp > Jay

Jay Monahan spent six years fighting for players’ respect. Brian Rolapp earned it in just six minutes! 72 of golf's biggest stars have now given their blessing to a man most have never even laid eyes on.

What sparked this love affair at first sight? Rolapp's 22-year NFL blueprint. Him being the mastermind behind record-shattering media deals, including the $111 billion, 11-year contract. The NFL locking down Amazon, Netflix, and YouTube while also keeping traditional networks happy under his watch.

Players are clearly now in awe of him. Here’s what some had to say (and these are just a few of the big names):

  • Adam Scott, who helped select Rolapp on the search committee, couldn't contain his excitement: ‘I believe he'll be a great leader for our Tour.’

  • Rory McIlroy, who has never met the guy, declared: ‘I think it's a positive thing for the Tour.’

  • Scottie Scheffler (who ‘literally’ heard Rolapp speaking for the first time this week) revealed below why the new CEO stepping in feels different. And you can’t disagree with him!

So what is Rolapp's plan? In short, it’s to get the best players together, lock down game-changing media deals, and kill outdated traditions.

Translation? It’s to end the LIV battle and make golf whole again. It’s also to blow up TV contracts. Remember, golf has built a billion-dollar TV empire, which is now bleeding. Rolapp wants to make stitches that are right up. And if what he did with the NFL is any indication, it should be a cakewalk.

So yes, the pros are happy. And the consensus is staggering. Of course, Monahan’s controversy-after-controversy is also probably the reason for it. But the bottom line is, Rolapp has their faith now.

It comes with great expectations, though, Brian. Good luck!

Feast or Famine

Ron Schied, head golf pro at TPC River Highlands, calls the 15th hole there the ultimate feast-or-famine hole. The 296-yard par-4 delivers eagles, birdies, and double bogeys in equal measure. You’ll see why here. It’s a psychological torture chamber that's been destroying egos since Bobby Weed built it in 1989. Water to the left, bunkers to the right. So, how do you play it? Well, let us tell you:

  • Choose wisely: Off the tee, you need to pick your club smartly. A 3-wood or driver is your best option. Hear it from some greats playing the hole here.

  • Forget the pin: With your approach shot, aim for the fat part of the green, because if you miss left or right, you're staring at double-bogey. Tony Finau‘s miss-hit waterball below is the exact poster of why you need caution.

  • Commit: Pick your shot, trust it thoroughly, and swing without hesitation whether you’re on the fairway or in a hazard. It’s how Greg Norman carded an eagle despite being stuck in the bunker at the hole and went on to win.

These fundamentals will help you crush any risk-reward hole, including the 15th at TPC River Highlands (if you ever find yourself there). And in case you do, this read may will come in handy:

Good at Golf

You won’t believe Jim Nantz’s answer to a question about general golfers’ scores! Just yesterday, the CBS broadcaster was asked what a person should be able to shoot to tell others they’re ‘good at golf’. And well, his answer was ridiculously low—watch it here.

Well, he’s wrong.

Statistically, you (and we) are probably better than we think. We did some digging, and turns out, the average weekend golfer shoots around 94... and 62% of all golfers shoot above 90! And it also depends on your age, as you’ll see in detail here.

So even if you're breaking 100 today, that’s something to be happy about. Oh, and if by chance you're consistently hitting the 70s, do more than celebrate. Only 10% of golfers manage that.

So forget Nantz, you’re good!

You don’t have to be an art critic or history buff to enjoy a good museum. Whether you’re into masterpieces, moon landings, or mind-blowing science exhibits, these spots here in America are absolutely worth the trip!

  • The Met (New York City): Iconic, massive, and packed with everything from ancient artifacts to Van Gogh. The museum itself also has a few secrets of its own!

  • The National WWII Museum (New Orleans): First-hand perspectives; immersive experiences of the war. It’s made for history buffs!

  • The Getty Center (Los Angeles): Breathtaking art, stunning architecture, and some of the best views in (and of) LA, like you’ll see here.

  • National Air and Space Museum (Washington, D.C.): Rockets, planes, and real moon suits. It’s a hit for all ages… and space lovers.

  • Museum of Science and Industry (Chicago): Submarines. Science Storms. Coal Mines. It’s got something for everyone. And you’ll never believe what their latest exhibit is about. Hint: a superhero!
