A Playoff Star Is Born

July 07, 2025 | Edition #164

 👋 Hey Golf Fans,

A packed agenda for today. Sure, Sabalenka and Alcaraz’s Wimbledon waves deserve attention, but hey we’re not here for that (our Tennis newsletter team skipped their Sunday sleep-in to cover that front, though)! So instead, let’s focus on the greens. Updates on the John Deere Classic, Lottie Woad’s stunning victory, a bizarre putting technique from a pro, and more in today’s edition. Let’s get started…

Playoff Maestro

Two playoffs. Two victories. At the John Deere Classic, Brian Campbell parred the first playoff hole to lift his second silverware of the season. The Illinois grad shot a 4-under 67 on Sunday and had to wait for Emiliano Grillo to finish. The Argentine two-putted for par on the 72nd hole to force a playoff.

Quite fitting. They were inseparable throughout the four rounds (65-66-68-67). And both had a chance to finish it off in regulation.

Neither could.

Campbell made three birdies between 10 and 13. But then double bogeyed the 15th. Grillo barged in. Only for a few minutes — he bogeyed the 16th. Both played the last three holes at 1-under and headed for a tiebreaker.

During the playoff, Grillo's tee shot landed near the gallery, and a marshal picked it up by mistake. Look at what happened afterward. Eventually, he succumbed to a bogey. Campbell, on the other hand, hit two methodical shots to land on the green; two-putted for par, and the $1.5M paycheck.

Notably, this was Campbell’s second playoff victory this season after the Mexico Open. Now he has a shot to join Jack Burke Jr. and Arnold Palmer for the most playoff appearances (4) in a season.

Oh, and by the way, this is what his stats this season look like:

  • SG: Off the Tee: 172nd (-1.029)

  • Longest Drives: 333rd (339 Yards)

  • Driving Distance: 174th (276.6 Yards)

It's almost an anomaly that he has two wins in an era where bomb-and-gouge is the prevailing strategy. It’s proof, though, that golf hasn’t lost its charm to power hitters.

Inspire. Aspire.

She did it! Two days ago, we said amateur Lottie Woad can make history. Yesterday, the 21-year-old FSU grad won the KPMG Irish Open by a whopping six shots. It’s one you probably missed thanks to it being a not-too-widely broadcasted LET event. But we can guarantee it wasn’t the only one. Here are five more top moments you missed from last week:

Heart: High-school golfer Carter Henning lost his leg in February in a snowmobile accident. But not his spirit. Watch him impressing pros at the John Deere Classic with his golf skills!

Shut-eyed: Ever made a putt with eyes closed? Yeah, us neither. But this PGA Tour winner regularly does it and swears by it. Watch him do it in a tournament here.

Bittersweet: Winners shed happy tears. But at the BMW International Open, Daniel Brown was mourning a personal tragedy after his win yesterday, like you can see here.

Celebration: Nelly Korda was in holiday spirits this week. She was rocking a USA-themed outfit to celebrate the 4th. Check it out here.

Wait, what?: Imagine a golf ball the size of a gym ball. Now imagine putting that… with an excavator! Before you scream, ‘What are you guys on!?just watch someone pull off exactly that at the John Deere Classic.

With that, we’re now officially moving into Links Golf Week, folks. Onto the Renaissance Club, where the majority of the world’s best will tee off for the Genesis Scottish Open.

Chunk No More

Getting up and down is a crucial part of keeping your scores low. Brian Campbell, who was 12/14 for scrambling at John Deere (the second-best in the field) is proof of that. So, what should you do to get better at scrambling? Well, here are three tips:

  • Try clubs that aren’t wedges. A club that has a lower loft. For example, with a 9-iron, you can hit a two-hop pitch shot without digging into the turf.

  • Get off the practice mat. Bring a bucket of balls under a tree or around the rough, untrimmed grass. Start punching out from there, just like PGA Professional James Whitaker shows here.

  • Understand your sense of balance and swing flow before hitting your shot. Try this one-handed drill for it:

Follow these three tips next time you hit the range. And for more pearls of wisdom, here’s some advice from a few major winners who are the best at getting up and down.

Mulligan Debate

Quick question. How rich would you be if someone gave you $10 for every mulligan? We know for sure that some would be millionaires (personally too, we’d definitely be in that good 6 figure mark, to be honest). Jokes aside, though, what’s the mulligan rule? If you ask your club members, the answer will vary as you’ll see here.

Some would say one, others a fair amount—at the end of the day, it all depends on prior agreements. But, remember this, if you keep shanking every alternate tee shot and keep taking a mulligan, that’s just bad etiquette.

Oh, and by the way, there’s now also a new thing called ‘Influencer Mulligan’. Never heard of it? Well, watch it live here.
