Amateur Humbles Every Pro on the Field

July 05, 2025 | Edition #163

 👋 Hey Golf Fans,

Honestly, we are still somewhat dizzy after all the celebrations yesterday. But that’s no reason to neglect Golf. Today, we are starting with a 21-year-old amateur’s shot at history. We also have John Deere updates, and a new 40-year-old NBA GOAT’s golfing efflorescence in Ohio! Let’s tee off…

Amateur Nightmare Dreams

Charley Hull and Madelene Sagström must’ve thought it was going to be an easy win. 36 holes later, it has turned into a humbling experience. Lottie Woad—a 21-year-old amateur—is leading the KPMG Women's Irish Open… by FOUR shots!

When was the last time an amateur won a LET or LPGA event? More than a decade ago! A certain someone named Lydia Ko conquered the 2012 Canadian Women's Open. She was 15! (Talk about ‘demoralizing’ for the pros on that field, huh?)

Woad (-11 under after R2) fired a stunning 67 yesterday at Carton House's O'Meara Course. And that’s hours after shooting a 68 on Thursday. She has 12 birdies through 36 holes this week.

But that’s Lottie Woad for you, though.

The current World No. 1 Amateur champ’s shot-shaping ability is on par with some of the biggest legends. Just look at this jaw-dropping flop shot—Phil and Tiger would be proud! And she may seem like fresh blood, but she’s not. Her current list of achievements will surprise you:

  • Won the 2024 Augusta National Women's Amateur.

  • Became the first woman from England to win the Mark H. McCormack Medal.

  • Grabbed a T10 at the 2024 Women’s British Open.

  • Is 3 points away from earning her LPGA Tour card.

Woad has stolen the spotlight from the Charley Hull (T3 - 4 strokes behind), and Georgia Hall (T54 - 10 strokes behind). The crowds may have come for the LPGA stars, but they’re no doubt going to be sticking around for the FSU grad. Good luck, Lottie!

Early Goodbyes!

There was no dearth of Red, White, and Blue at Deere Run yesterday—just take a look at this guy rocking an American flag-printed jumpsuit with a beer in hand. Expected. What was unexpected, though, were the fireworks at the course as well.

Not literally, of course, but thanks to Illinois local Doug Ghim, things were sparkling!

The PGA Tour pro shot 3-under 68 to capture his first 36-hole lead. Believe it or not, Ghim has holed out five times in two days. At the 15th, he even made one from 179 yards. And then a few holes later, just look at his hole-out (yes, again) to take the lead:

But the week ended early for a bunch of pros. Jason Day missed the cut by three strokes. Day tried yesterday. But when you shoot 3-over in the opening round while others are cooking the course like a barbecue, there is only so much you can do.

Whereas, Michael Kim, the 2018 champ, made three bogeys and a double to crash out. Tom Kim shot 5-under on Friday but missed the cut by a stroke. He was tied with PGA Tour prodigy Luke Clanton. The 21-year-old’s double on the par-3 7th cost him dearly.

But the most shocking of all? Ben Griffin.

The Charles Schwab champ, who even challenged Scottie’s dominance, walked off early after two rounds of 71-68. He still found his moment of fame, though, thanks to the officials who misspelt his name on the caddie bib—How would you even pronounce this

Notably, besides the defending champ, Davis Thompson, none of the past winners are inside the top 30. Thompson (just a stroke behind) has the chance to become only the third to defend his title. The winning score has rarely stopped before 20-under (he’s currently -11), so pull out your birdie gun, Thompson. You’re going to need it.

We had a little hotdog-eating competition here at EssentiallySports yesterday, and turns out the winner was one, from our very own Essentially Golf team! He devoured five whole hot dogs. He called in sick today but is still bragging about it. We’re hoping some of you can shatter his pride…

Pitching Can Be Easy

Imagine this. You are 70 yards away from the pin. You need to save par to save the match against your friend. Can you pull off a magical wedge like Tiger did here? Well, now you definitely can! Just grab your 54° SW or a 50° GW, and then follow this:

  • Setup: Grab the shaft lower, and your swing will be bigger than a chip shot. Also, place the ball a bit forward of your stance.

  • Swing: The absolutely crucial part is pivoting–your upper body needs to move a lot more. How much? Brad Faxon shows below.

  • Divot: Don’t take too much divot, you will lose spin and distance, and your ball flight will be low as a chip shot.

Keep these three basic tips in mind the next time you are 70 yards off the pin. Once you have mastered that, focus more on your distance:

Justin Thomas makes a surprising LIV Golf wish. And he says that’s what you and we (the fans) also want! Is it though?

Cringe as f*ck: That’s exactly what Bryson DeChambeau’s latest showmanship was dubbed by this PGA Tour pro.

Golfing Through Life

Guess who was celebrating the 4th of July in style? What? The fans at the John Deere Classic? Yes, them too. But no, we are not talking about them. It’s King James. Now you’ve probably seen Michael Jordan playing golf with Tiger. A few days ago we showed you Carlos Alcaraz swinging his racket like a pro golfer too. Now, it looks like it’s the 4-time NBA champ’s time.

Offseason. Holiday weekend. LeBron thought, Why not be Steph Curry for a day and play some golf? We will not rate his swing (you can, though), but let’s just say James has an elite trash-talking game. And he brought that to the greens with some heavy ‘fu*ks’ and more like you’ll see (and hear real loud) here.

The fireworks may be over, but not your celebrations. If you think you’ve missed the 4th of July rush when it comes to pampering yourself, you’re wrong. And these massive deals will tell you exactly how wrong!
