Arnie’s Miracle, Jack’s Love & Phil’s Obsession

Dec 25, 2025 | Edition #241

👋 Hey Golf Fans,
Merry Christmas from the Essentially Golf team. We are joyful and grateful that you decided to start the day with us. We’re in good spirits, and you will be too after reading today’s edition featuring Christmas golf, legendary tales, wholesome celebrations, and more.
Let’s get started…

A Merry Round

Golfing on Christmas? Yeah, we can see some frowns and raised eyebrows. But we say: why not? We're not asking you to eschew the family fun for a round. Quite the contrary.
Yes, for good reason, most golf clubs remain closed on Christmas Day. At least to visitors. Some even yank flags to thwart members and intrepid golfers sneaking a festive round. But hey, many courses remain open for members. And some even allow visitors to book a tee time as well.
After all, golf and Christmas run on similar themes. Fairway chats, inside jokes, kids cart-jumping, and parents dawdling. Core memories. Heck, you can make it better by listening to this Golf Christmas Carol ft. Tiger Woods, Scottie Scheffler, and Charley Hull in the car.
So what's the harm in stretching your legs and cracking a few crisp iron shots? Along with your family. For those who are already on board, it’s going to be a good day of golf.
First, an empty course, so no pushy crowds. Tee times are cheap. You can flaunt your new golf glad rags, maybe even don a Santa hat. Test that shiny new gear you bought. Or scored as a gift.
And of course, enjoy special bonding hours with your loved ones. Book an early morning tee time, play a nine-hole round, and be back at home in time. Sounds like a plan? You’ll create memories that you’ll love to think of a decade from now.
Trust us. And Merry Christmas.

Memories

We know Christmas is a day for laughter. But some iconic moments from the golf world are too hard to ignore, so here are some memories to make you feel a little warmer.
Savior: Does Santa visit children’s hospitals? Well, at the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, he sure does. King himself made sure of that. After hearing that admitted children were sad because they were stuck in the hospital for Christmas, Palmer once rang Santa himself. Grab a handful of tissues before you watch what happened next.
Tear-jerker: How close was Jack Nicklaus to his father? Woody Hayes, the legendary Ohio State football coach, arrived at Jack Nicklaus’s last Christmas with his dad, Charlie. He gave them his book with a note. You only need to read the first line to understand the depth of Jack and Charlie’s relationship.
Prodigy: Just five days before Tiger Woods’s first birthday, his dad, Earl, gifted him a putter. Tiger was so excited that he dragged the putter all over the house. Next year, he asked for a 2-iron. Little wonder that, years later, he dressed up as Santa himself, as you will see here.
Obsession: Phil Mickelson is a Christmas fanatic. What else would you call someone who puts up the tree and lights on November 1? Only holiday songs blast in the house and car for two months. Need more proof? Watch him beg to stay on Santa's nice list, and you’ll believe us.
Humble: Lee Trevino honed his game at Hardy’s driving range and Tenison Park in Dallas. After his 1968 U.S. Open win, how could he forget his roots? Months later, a press pic showed him hawking Christmas trees there. This one picture will make you respect Trevino even more.

If You Had a Chance What Gift Would You Want From Santa? |
Monday’s Results: 29.84% of you picked Jack Nicklaus as your dream partner for a round of golf on Christmas Eve. 25.13% of you chose Lexi Thompson, and 18.88% picked Scottie Scheffler and Annika Sorenstam.

Gate Drill

Do you know what separates us weekend warriors from Tiger Woods? Proper putting warmup routines. That's the reason why Tiger's a green magician (check out this audacious monster putt for proof). But worry not. Today, we’ve brought his tee drill to help you improve.
Place two tees about 4 feet from the hole. Put one right off the toe and another right off the heel to create a narrow ‘gate.’
Now rest the putter up against the heel tee to ensure the clubface remains square every single time.
Start with your right hand only on the putter. Hit 20-30 putts through the tees to feel the face rotate, load in the stroke, and release through impact. Watch how Tiger’s clubface makes contact in the video below.
Once comfortable with that, grip the putter with both hands and replicate the same. Bounce back and forth between right-hand-only and both hands for multiple reps. Once you master this, try the putting drills from another golf legend.

John Daly praises LIV Golf as he talks about the one thing the PGA Tour is consistently struggling with.
Bryson DeChambeau’s fan admits feeling like being ‘kidnapped’ when he was picked up for a unique challenge.
Brooks Koepka tops our list of five big names not returning to LIV Golf for the next season.

Wild

Half the world is dissecting Brooks Koepka’s LIV exit. The other half has pitchforks ready if he returns to the PGA Tour. Brooks? He is busy living in the Home Alone ‘universe’ with wife, Jena, and son, Crew. Yes, the family enjoyed “Home Alone Tour” – a four-hour limousine ride to the spots where the iconic movie was shot. Watch a happy Brooks showing his (mediocre) dance skills here.
He apparently left LIV to spend more time with family. His wife suffered a miscarriage a few months back. But hey, it’s Christmas, and the Koepkas look happy. Granted, it wasn’t as wild as the time Koepka dropped his pants on his wife’s Instagram post. In case you forgot that, here is a refresher.
