On This Day

On August 27, 1995, Tiger Woods won the U.S. Amateur Championship at Newport Country Club in Rhode Island, successfully defending his title. Woods defeated Georgia Tech’s George “Buddy” Marucci Jr. in the final, rallying from behind to seal the victory. A year later, he secured the championship once again, becoming the only golfer in history to win three consecutive U.S. Amateur titles.

Annika Sorenstam won five consecutive Mizuno Classic titles from 2001 to 2005. She remains the only player in LPGA history to capture the same event five years in a row. The closest is Laura Davies, who captured four straight Standard Register PING titles from 1994 to 1997.
