Daly Sets His Wildest Record Yet

Sept 13, 2025 | Edition #196
👋 Hey Golf Fans,
John Daly has pulled off something that none of us expected. It went down in the history books, but unfortunately, in the wrong one. We will talk about that in today’s edition, alongside some food for thought on the PGA Tour-LIV Golf saga, and a brave cancer warrior’s story.
Let’s get swinging…

Unwanted Record

The John Daly legend keeps growing! After all, even at 59, Daly is in the limelight. But this time for a rather ridiculous record on the Senior Tour. At the first round of the Sanford International, Daly picked a 19 on one hole. Yup, a wacky, you-gotta-see-it-to-believe-it 19!
Daly hacked his tee shot on the 12th and landed in the rough. From there, he dispatched not one, not two, not even three, but SEVEN balls to the water hazard. He finally found dry land on his 16th shot, and then scrambled from the collar of the green before chipping in for a 19.
Nevertheless, Daly soldiered on, carding a birdie and a bogey over the final six holes, and signing for an 18-over-88. We’ve seen worse rounds in the senior Tour, but that 19 is actually the highest score recorded in a single hole in the history of the PGA Tour Champions.
The culprit? Of course, he hasn’t accused anyone. But then watch Daly starting his warm-up routine with this ‘deadly’ combination, and you will have an idea who (or what) might cost him 14 strokes.
With this, Daly shattered his previous record of 18 on the par-5 sixth at the 1998 Arnold Palmer Invitational. So, this latest feat takes the cake, even if it’s not very surprising. Daly underwent hand surgery early this season, withdrew from the first round of the Regions Tradition, and managed only one top 50 from nine starts.
But don't let this latest Sanford stumble tarnish John Daly's image. Age has taken its toll, but Long John can still bomb and throw darts. And when he keeps fighting despite cancer, despite health struggles, it's hard not to root for the guy - warts and all.

Beat the Heat with JT
A golfer’s worst enemy isn’t really wind… It’s the sun. Did you know 1 in 5 golfers develops skin cancer? We’re not trying to scare you. But it is the reason why precaution is necessary. And Justin Thomas comes in clutch there with his brand WearSPF. It is premium sun protection designed for the course and the heat. It’s more than just sunblock, too. Here’s how:
Broad-spectrum defense: Blocks both UVA (aging rays) and UVB (burning rays)
Sweat + water resistance: Long-lasting protection through heat and movement
Lightweight & invisible: No greasy feel, no distractions
It’s been created by a pro golfer. Designed for those who live under the sun. So, it’s perfect for you to play out your round—JT Style!

Fundamental Problem

By now, you know that a PGA Tour and LIV agreement is a complex beast, mainly because of two puzzles. First: Can the two tours live in harmony? But before we get bogged down by the logistics of co-existence, there's a more fundamental question:
Is a merger needed at all?
Jimmy Dunne, architect of the June 6 merger agreement and former PGA Tour policy board member, has some clear thoughts. Dunne now believes a merger is utterly superfluous. The PGA Tour is in "good shape," and “LIV seems to be doing what they want to do.”
Why fix what isn't broken? The PGA Tour has witnessed a 15% year-over-year viewership surge. While LIV has struggled to match that, it continues to draw live, mostly young, attendees. This long queue of fans at the Chicago event is quite telling.
Now, an obvious downside of that is you bring in non-golf fans, which leads to incidents like this one below. One fan called Bryson a ‘Jack***’ at an event. It did reach the Crusher captain’s ears, as you can clearly see from his reaction:
Regardless, the PGA Tour has been forced to adapt to LIV’s threat, with bigger purses, signature events, and fan-forward initiatives like Creator Classic. All have been part of the Tour's efforts to stay ahead of the competition.
Somewhat ironic, given that the PIF-backed league is running at a loss. Can you guess the amount? Well, the answer will leave you in shock. But of course, LIV shows no sign of stopping. Which means expect more evolution in the Tour, and no end in sight for unification.

Precision Play

World No. 1 Jeeno Thitikul is unstoppable. Ten top-10s across 16 starts, one title, and now she is in contention at the Kroger Queen City Championship. Her short game has been razor-sharp this season: SG: Around the Green: +0.08, and SG: Putting: +1.05. Here’s how she makes it possible:
Jeeno doesn’t try to make every chip go in — she wants to give herself the easiest putt possible. Instead of trying to do too much around the greens, pick your target and stick to it.
She focuses on speed first, then direction. Golfers who learn to control distance first usually get better at putting faster, as PGA-certified golf coach Brendon Elliott explains here.
Jeeno is good at getting out of tough spots because she practices from difficult lies and tricky positions on the range. Check out how she nailed this chip despite the tight pin placement and unforgiving angle.
Keep your routine around the greens the same every time, be it an easy bump-and-run or a challenging chip. Once you have mastered the fundamentals, try these drills to perfect your chipping.

Unstoppable

There was an unusual excitement at The Sanford International. And no, not because of John Daly. On the first tee, all eyes were on only one person: 14-year-old cancer survivor Emmett Zorr. The Sanford Children’s Hospital Ambassador, with his brother on the bag, took the ceremonial shot. Listen to the loud applause and cheers he got from the audience.
His life story is just as impressive, though. A childhood diagnosis of Rhabdomyosarcoma in his right eye didn't tee up a bright future. But Emmett proved the odds wrong. He is now cancer-free. Though his journey's not over — more surgeries are on the horizon — Emmett refuses to put life on hold: he’s draining jumpers on the court, revving up his motorcycle, and teeing off on the green. Oh, he also took time to design this caddie bib for Ernie Els’s bagman.
