East Lake Won’t Play Nice This Time

Aug 21, 2025 | Edition #186

 👋 Hey Golf Fans,

The Tour Championship starts today, and Scottie Scheffler is gunning for golf immortality. He is just one victory away from becoming the first to win back-to-back FedEx Cups. But East Lake won’t make it easy, as our analysis of the course and the field shows. More on that, along with Brian Rolapp’s curious words, and a putting record are in today’s edition.

Let’s tee off…

East Lake Unleashed

East Lake went through a metamorphosis in 2024. But the PGA Tour didn’t stop there, bringing more subtle changes this year. The 530-yard 14th has been reverted to a par-4 from a par-5 last year. Green speed is expected to hit 13.5+ on the stimpmeter. Pin locations will be moved farther back to smaller areas.

Now add to that those greens-within-greens complexes, and zoysia lies around the greens, and you have a course that demands power, precision, and creativity. Not that East Lake was an easy test in 2024. The 510-yard opening hole was the 4th hardest on the Tour, playing at +0.425 over par. 78 bunkers forced players to rethink every shot.

Interestingly, the Tour management is mulling over a venue change for the season finale. Insider reports suggest that the Tour Championship will rotate among three courses. Can you guess which ones? Hint: one of them has hosted a major recently.

Nevertheless, it appears East Lake has done everything to make the FedEx Cup finale all the more interesting and harder to win. And matured conditions promise tougher scoring and tighter leaderboards.

Speaking of which, Scottie Scheffler arrives with +160 odds at ESPN BET, the shortest since Tiger's 2009 odds at East Lake. But the format revolution changes everything. Starting strokes are gone completely. Everyone begins at even par.

So, Rory McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood, Ludvig Aberg, and others have a genuine chance to lift two trophies come Sunday. The new format creates genuine drama. The FedEx Cup is now everyone's trophy to claim.

New World Order

Brian Rolapp, the new PGA Tour CEO, has created a new council. The nine-member Future Competition Committee will be headed by… yes, your hunch is correct, the usual suspect. It has a very simple goal: ‘to create events that really matter.’

But will the real change come from another committee? We've seen this with LIV merger talks that are yet to produce something substantial. Interestingly, Rolapp shared some inside news on the negotiations.

Will you see LIV pros in the Tour next year? Rolapp was asked this in the Golf Channel interview, and he was not coy in handling hard questions, as you can watch below:

Nevertheless, the phrase ‘events that really matter’ is a loaded one. Especially when you couple that with the three principles he reiterated:

Parity. Simplicity. Scarcity.

The first two seem clear enough, but the third one muddies the water. If you are the tournament sponsor of the Procore Championship — the first post-season event — this might give you some hope. Or, send a chill down your spine.

Is your event significant enough to matter? Will Rolapp forge a way to make big players come to smaller tournaments? He is now delegating these decisions to Tiger's committee while focusing on business operations. And this comes just two days after the PGA Tour landed this $9.45B footwear giant as a title sponsor.

Now, until this committee produces concrete specifics beyond talking points, sponsors remain caught between hope and anxiety. So, the bottom line is we have another committee. Some familiar goals. And not a set timeline.

But Rolapp promised one thing: a change is coming.

Knee Savior

Knee pain killing your back nine? You're not alone. Around 18% of golfers battle with the same issue. But not all of them follow the right way to fix it: leg press with low range, high load. Many think leg presses worsen joint pain, but not when you do it right:

  • Position: Place your feet shoulder-width apart on the platform. Keep them centered, not too high, not too low.

  • Range: Lower the weight only until your joints reach about 45 degrees. Then drive through your heels back to start, as you can see here.

  • Finish: Push to almost-straight legs, but don't lock out. Squeeze those quads hard at the top. This final extension builds the stability you need for powerful, pain-free swings. And if you are concerned about age, this should drive that fear away.

This is just one piece of your knee recovery puzzle, though. Our complete guide below has more game-changing exercises that'll keep you walking eighteen holes pain-free.

Historic Roll

Henry Grillo swung his putter like a driver and waited. The ball rolled for what seemed like an eternity. It eventually dropped into the cup. Grillo and his team lost their mind. They sprinted toward the hole, fist-pumping like he'd just won the Masters. Then he dived into the lake like a Chevron Championship winner. Overreaction?

Well, Grillo just wrote his name into the Guinness Book of World Records. That was the longest putt ever holed. How long? He broke the previous record of 416 feet, set by Australia’s David Micheluzzi. By a wide margin. Check out the miraculous putt here.

It was no luck, though. It took over six hours with a rain delay and hundreds of attempts. The scattered practice balls across the green told the story of pure determination. Kudos!
