Family Drama to Heat Up PNC

 👋 Hey Golf Fans,

And just like that, the silly season wraps up. But not before Orlando hosts the PNC Championship. While Tiger and Charlie will skip it this time, a 41-year-old pro debuts with his dad. Meanwhile, the Langers eye a three-peat. Today, we’ll size up their odds, catch you up on missed happenings, and talk about other stories.

Let’s get started…

Family

December is touted as the quietest month on Tour, but the PNC Championship begs to differ. Sure, it's just 36 holes, and no Tiger-Charlie pairing this time, but some things will keep the hype alive.

Since 2012, the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club has played host to this event. This par-72, 7,142-yard course boasts four par-5s, four par-3s, and 10 par-4s. The Langers and the Kordas have to dodge wetlands, cypress heads, marshes, ponds, pines, and oaks. Beyond nature's tests, bunkers, and subtly contoured greens await.

This course also features wide, gently rolling fairways. So low scores are possible here. Davis Love III holds the 18-hole low score record with 56 in the second round in the 2018 edition. But the real champ? Bernhard Langer, with six titles alongside his sons Jason (4) and Stefan (2), edged Raymond Floyd's five for most wins ever.

His rep here isn't spotless. however. Yes, it’s about his long putter. Check out this brutal dig from a fan that probably left him as red as a ripe tomato.

Still, the Langers are the favorites this time. They'll chase three straight wins. Hubris aside, it'll be as tough as last time. Six former champs are returning, including John Daly and John Daly II. Plus, the field packs eight ex-world No. 1s, and the 20 pros boast 40+ majors and 900+ international titles.

Gary Woodland, 41, debuts with dad Dan. Lee Trevino at 86 is the oldest and only player to tee off in every PNC edition. Youngest amateur is Annika Sorenstam’s 14-year-old son, Will McGee. The youngest pro is 27-year-old Nelly Korda.

Yes, it’s a family event. But expect everyone to outdo each other anyway.

Challengers

Yes, the PNC Championship is finally teeing off. But a few other moments snuck in on Friday that you shouldn't miss.

Awe: Nelly Korda and dad Petr are facing Lee Trevino this week at the PNC Championship. But you'd hardly guess it from their chat. Asked for her favorite Trevino moment, Korda gushed over his one-liners that still make her blurt "holy guacamole!" Check this rare footage of Trevino trash-talking everyone (including producers) to the ground. And you’d agree with the Kordas.

Timeless: Fred Couples is not Bernhard Langer (says Fred). He doesn’t grind week in, week out. Maybe seven to eight events a year (nine in 2025), but nothing as crazy as Langer’s twenty-one in 2025, a guy just two years older. Couples knows he can’t (possibly) win against the young bloods. But the old guys on the PGA Tour Champions? Well, hear the bold prediction from Couples himself.

Future: Former Masters champ Trevor Immelman, now OWGR chairman, dropped some interesting news on Friday. He's in constant talks with LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neil to iron out a solution for the Saudi-backed league. It has little to do with LIV’s recent format tweaks, more to do with “meritocracy.” According to reports, LIV Golfers will also receive world ranking points. Sooner than anyone expected, as you can see here.

Power

As drivers grow bigger, lighter, and more forgiving, for the weekend amateurs, subtle tweaks in swing mechanism work wonders. Here’s how to crank three-time major champ Padraig Harrington-like power without losing control.

  • Swing at 3/4 speed, but hit the brakes hard on the grip right after impact. This forces the clubhead to accelerate through release, building whip-like speed.

  • Drive your arms aggressively in front of your chest, generating the second-biggest speed source. Focus on arms pulling ahead for pure speed without slicing.

  • Rotate your chest aggressively, but keep your shoulders square to target at impact. Then, squeeze knees inward under your torso, lock the right hip up just before impact, and explode upward with ground force. Watch closely how Harrington moves here.

Of course, you need to grind hard on the range. And then try to build your speed more with the other ways we’ve listed below.

Celebrations

When Akshay Bhatia first met Presleigh Schultz in 2021, she knew nothing about golf. But Bhatia sensed kismet, so he did what modern Romeos do: slid into her Instagram DM. Cut to four years. They tied the knot at The Abaco Club. Check out the gorgeous wedding pictures here.

Meanwhile, Min Woo Lee’s week was pure pain. The PGA Tour pro got his wisdom teeth yanked. Yep, his face ballooned like a chipmunk. Yep, he poked fun at his puffed cheeks. You must check it for the punchline alone.
