Hall of Famer, 62, Returns to PGA Tour

Jan 08, 2026 | Edition #247
👋 Hey Golf Fans,
The future of about 80 golfers hangs in the balance this week. Three spots in the LIV Golf 2026 season are up for grabs in Florida. We'll break down what's standing between them and their future. We’ll also talk about Vijay Singh’s curious decision, LPGA’s new step, Tiger’s birthday bash, and more.
Let’s get swinging…

Grueling

LIV Golf Promotions tees off today in Florida. The PGA Tour tried its best to throw a monkey wrench in LIV’s plan, forcing some players to withdraw. Nevertheless, around 80 golfers will still tee off this week.
The course, Black Diamond Ranch, also matches the zeitgeist of the tournament. Rolling sand hills up to 150 feet, tricky doglegs, and limestone cliffs — this Tom Fazio course demands control and positioning. Fairways are framed by trees, with tee angles dictating approach options. Greens are subtly contoured and well-protected.
It received a thorough revamp from Tripp Davis in 2024, which included regrassing fairways, roughs, and tees and reconstructing greens. He also installed all-new bunkers. The most jaw-dropping part of the course is the closing stretch from 16 to 18, which Fazio called one of his three defining works.
Fitting for an event that will have plenty of drama. Here’s what’s at stake:
Top three players will earn 2026 LIV Golf cards.
Top ten players can tee off in all International Series events.
The winner will pocket $200K; the runner-up $150K.
It will be played over four days, with scores resetting each day until the third round. After Sunday's finale, the top three will enter the 2026 LIV Golf roster, which swells to 57 players this year from 54.
Anthony Kim, despite his lackluster performance in the regular season, remains a legitimate contender. He notched a T5 at the PIF Saudi International, his first top-10 in 14 years. Meanwhile, Matt Jones returns to the field after landing in the Open Zone last season. Ben Campbell is here for the same reason. Keep an eye on John Catlin and Andy Ogletree as well.
Whatever happens this week, expect triumph. And tears.

Big Moves

Plenty happened in the golf world yesterday. Here are the key highlights to catch up on.
Ageless: You might will see Vijay Singh teeing off on the PGA Tour this year. The Tour offers a full-exemption to players within the top-25 on the all-time career money list. But only once in their career. Vijay, sixth on that list ($71.2M), opted to utilize that leverage and caused massive uproar on social media, as you can see here.
What to expect: Turning 63 in February, he has already committed to the Sony Open. So expect him to play a few more. Now the Hall of Famer hasn't teed off in a regular PGA Tour event since the 2021 Honda Classic. But he hasn’t lost his effortless swing — watch the video below for proof.
Change: Only in our last edition were we talking about munis, and yesterday came the news that a muni is going to be the new home of a major. The Chevron Championship will move to Houston’s Memorial Park Golf Course, to be hosted about a month after the PGA Tour’s Texas Children’s Houston Open.
Why this matters: A muni course near downtown Houston will draw bigger crowds. The downside? Well, RIP to the Poppie Pond tradition. In honor of that, look at this iconic side flip of Lexi’s caddie into the pond.
Farewell: Derek Sprague is stepping down as the PGA of America CEO after just over a year on the job. He informed the board in December, citing the need to return to New York to support his mother and mother-in-law.
What’s next: Sprague didn’t really have a lot of experience, and his tenure was turbulent, marked by the Ryder Cup nightmare, for which he wrote an apology letter to Rory. He will remain in an advisory role until his successor is found. Here is why this development is significant.

Source of Power

If you want to improve your swing speed, follow two golden rules: ditch a bit of inhibition and grab a launch monitor. That’s three-time major champ Padraig Harrington's first advice. The Irishman is no.1 in driving distance (309 yards) on the Senior Tour. Here's what he suggests you do next:
Most of us lose force when we go high on the backswing. So, Paddy advises testing short backswings to build massive force and then returning to your normal swing.
Lift the heel of your lead leg. Accelerate by pulling your hands and arms, like ripping a cable or pulley system. Decelerate to transfer energy efficiently and maximize speed.
Your lead leg must spring back at you so that you can generate the power. How do you ensure it? Check out how Harrington does it easily in the tutorial below.
Your launch monitor delivers key feedback, sparking that itch to improve. Once you get a natural feel for it, learn from Rory McIlroy how to boost your clubhead speed.

Birthday Bash

Tiger Woods's 50th birthday bash is spilling into the new year. On Jan 14, he'll host 300 guests at a gala in Palm Beach's The Breakers. The dress code will have “a touch of red.” The menu draws from his five Masters Champions Dinners. Yes, that includes chicken fajitas and an iconic dish Tiger served after his 2019 triumph. Can you guess? Well, here is your answer.
Oh, and did we mention the legendary Jon Bon Jovi will perform? Hardly surprising. He's a fixture at Tiger Jams, the annual fundraisers for TGR Foundation. And why not? Look at this side-by-side comparison of Bon Jovi in 1986 and 2025 — at 63, the Grammy winner’s energy level is mind-blowing.
P.S. We also celebrated the Big Cat’s birthday in our own way. Here’s what you might have missed out on.
