On May 13, 1999, Gene Sarazen, aka “The Squire,” died in Naples, Florida, of pneumonia at age 97. The son of Italian immigrants, he was born Eugenio Saraceni and later anglicized his name to Gene Sarazen after winning a tournament because he disliked how his original name appeared. He began caddying at about ten, taught himself golf, adopted the interlocking grip, and steadily honed his game to complete his career Grand Slam with a win at the 1935 Masters.
