Justin Rose Tames Playoff Demons

Aug 11, 2025 | Edition #182

 👋 Hey Golf Fans,

Justin Rose turned back the clock in Memphis yesterday. First win since the 2023 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, and that too in a nail-biting playoff. With one FedEx Cup playoff tournament down and the drama just heating up, the tail-end of the regular season is delivering everything we hoped for. Details about Rose’s record-breaking win, ridiculous hole-outs, seagull heists, and more in today’s edition.

Let's tee off...

Viva la Rose

Finally! After 30 agonizing months, after the Masters heartbreak, after wondering if Father Time had won, Justin Rose reminded everyone that champions never truly fade. The 45-year-old captured his 12th PGA Tour title at TPC Southwind, outlasting J.J. Spaun in a three-hole playoff.

It wasn’t a ‘rosy’ start, though.

The Englishman trailed leader Tommy Fleetwood by three shots with five holes to go. But then four consecutive birdies between 14th and 17th catapulted him right into contention. He missed a 13-foot birdie putt on the 18th and settled for a 3-under 67.

Meanwhile, Fleetwood started cracking under pressure, bogeying the crucial 17th. Looked like Rose had won, but J.J. Spaun gatecrashed the party, firing back-to-back birdies on 16 and 17 to force a playoff.

Rose had been here before. Most recently in April. At Augusta. Against Rory. He came undone. Before that, Rose had been in four playoffs, losing thrice. Not this time, but.

The first playoff hole squeezed every bit of Rose’s energy and athleticism. Just watch the shot he pulled off, standing barely inches away from the pond. Most of us would be swimming in the water after the shot, but not Rose. He saved par.

Three holes of sudden-death playoff later, after matching Spaun shot for shot, Rose drained the decisive birdie putt that had eluded him at Augusta. The emotion poured out—roars, and fist pumps. Pure relief from a champion who'd waited too long.

With this victory, Rose became:

  • The first player in his 40s to win on Tour this season.

  • Oldest winner on Tour since Phil at the 2021 PGA Championship.

  • Oldest European to win on the PGA Tour in the modern era

Sometimes, the sweetest victories come to those who refuse to surrender—even at 45.

Wild Weekend

Justin Rose might have stolen Sunday's headlines, but beyond that, the golf world served up some absolute gems that you definitely missed! Here are our top five:

Lucky acrobat: Fowler almost fell into the water on the 18th, hitting an approach shot. Consequently, the ball went flying to the grandstand roof. But it didn’t stop there—why can’t we amateurs be this lucky?

Heroics: A bunker hole-out to win your first tournament? No kidding! Christo Lamprecht pulled off a shot Phil would be proud jealous of. That, too, on the 72nd hole to land his first victory. Then he went absolutely bonkers—we bet you can watch this on repeat, and each time you will get goosebumps.

Laying up?: Back in 1998 U.S. Open, John Daly drove the 7th green at the Olympic Club. 27 years later, his son, Daly II, teed off at the same venue for the U.S. Amateur. He was asked to replicate that shot, and obliged happily. Check out the two shots side-by-side in one clip.

Gravity: Connor Syme faced a 60-foot putt on Friday. But he misjudged it. By a mind-boggling margin, and ended up in the… well, watch for yourself where it ended up! The commentators were at a loss for words.

Pure class: Tommy Fleetwood came up short again. But won the hearts. Again. Feel the emotion here— the smile, the silence, and the pause between the words. Oh, he signed autographs too.

And lest we forget, Min Woo Lee played 18 holes in record time, proving golf doesn't need to crawl. Hats off! Now that we are into the second week of the FedEx Cup playoff, something tells us this week delivered just a taste of what's coming.

Red Line

You're standing by a water hazard, frustrated after a bad shot. You quickly drop your ball and play on. Later, you discover that you took a wrong drop into the penalty area. That's precisely what happened to Michael Kim, and the consequences were too harsh. Here is what you should do to avoid what Kim endured:

  1. The line is sacred. No part of your ball can touch the red penalty area line or cross the vertical plane of the line. The last part is important here.

  2. If it does touch, three relief options are available: stroke-and-distance, back-on-the-line relief, or lateral relief within two club-lengths of where your ball crossed. USGA has clearly explained the rule in this illuminating video below:

  1. What if you are still stuck in the penalty area after boldly playing as it lies? Well, all the relief options are there. Plus, add another penalty stroke. Bingo!

Kim's mistake shows what happens when you rush the process. Had he used proper lateral relief away from the line, he'd have saved a stroke. This adds to a litany of controversies that rocked professional golf this year, which you can read below.

Seagull Heist

Pebble Beach sits in one of California's most protected coastal ecosystems, where playing alongside seals, deer (yes, deer too, as you can see here), and countless seabirds is part of the magic. Golfers love these wildlife encounters. Most of the time, anyway.

During a recent round, one golfer discovered that not all animal interactions end with cute Instagrammable photos. A seagull decided to take matters into its wings and, let's say, someone's credit cards are probably getting some serious frequent flyer miles right now. We won't spoil what happens next — rather, you watch the seagull-chase thriller right here.

Here is the fun part: this isn’t Pebble Beach's first seagull scandal either.

They've got history. Phil Mickelson learned it the hard way at the 2019 U.S. Open when this strange encounter happened. Let's say these birds have zero respect for golf etiquette. Every golfer has stories about the round that went sideways. But wallet theft by wildlife? That's 19th hole legend material right there.
