Keegan's Men Stand Tall in Defeat

Sept 28, 2025 | Edition #204

 👋 Hey Golf Fans,

At the end of the day, it didn’t really matter. Europeans will fly over the Atlantic with the Ryder Cup safely in their lap. The Stars and Stripes almost poured cold water on that plan. But it wasn’t meant to be. We'll break down the intense singles battles, Luke Donald's captaincy magic, and more in today's edition.

Let’s get swinging…

Cliffhanger

Entertainment. Rowdiness. Passion. The 45th Ryder Cup had it all. Europe’s commanding 7-point lead almost vaporized thanks to a red-hot Team USA on Sunday. The day started with a half point for each team after Viktor Hovland pulled out due to a neck injury. That meant Europe was just 2 points away from winning. A walk in the park.

Or so everyone thought.

Because Keegan’s men certainly raised hell. Cameron Young added the first point to the leaderboard. Justin Thomas followed. So did Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, and JJ Spaun. Bryson DeChambeau mounted a heroic comeback to tie the match against Matt Fitzpatrick after going 5 down through seven. But Bethpage wasn’t to be turned into Medinah. Or Brookline.

And it came down to Shane Lowry to put a dagger through Team USA’s heart. On the 18th, a spectacular approach left him only six feet away from the pin. After Russell Henley missed his birdie putt, Lowry knew he was standing inches away from history.

The Irishman made a successful 6-foot birdie to halve the match, and literally lost his mind. Watch Shane Lowry’s raw, wild, and untamed celebration here.

It figures, too:

  • Europe sealed a first away triumph for any side since 2012.

  • Luke Donald became the second captain to win the first two Ryder Cups since Ben Hogan in 1949.

  • The two-point victory margin is the closest since 2012.

Regardless, the Europeans were supposed to sail through Sunday smoothly. But that boat was almost capsized in the American vortex. So, Bethpage will be remembered for many things, and one of them will be an almost impossible comeback that never happened. But that’s golf!

Emotion

Beyond Europe winning the Ryder Cup and the viral clip of a fan throwing a glass of beer at Rory’s wife, a lot happened today that you definitely missed. Here are the top three:

‘Rosey’ escape: On the par-5, 13th, Justin Rose pulled out his driver on the fairway and then sent his approach flying near the grandstand. As bad a place as you can imagine. But then watch the drool-worthy recovery shot he pulled off from there. He won the hole. He is also 45.

Pumped: If you could blame one person to give the Americans a last-minute hope, it would be Justin Thomas. JT went bonkers after draining the final putt to clinch a point against Tommy Fleetwood. Yes, Europeans bested us, but you will still get goosebumps watching this roaring celebration from Thomas.

American love: Leading up to the Ryder Cup week, Bryson DeChambeau has faced several criticisms and accusations – of loving his YouTube career more than his country, putting LIV Golf over America. Yet, after Sunday’s singles, just watch how he answered all the accusations with a single, tearful statement.

Well, that pretty much sums up the final day of the Ryder Cup for you. But before we make our reading on Luke Donald’s captaincy, we’ve a question for you…

Captain

Luke Donald’s strategy can be broken down into simple parts. Yes, of course, he maintains an ice-cool composure — his heart rate was actually shown on broadcast yesterday. But first things first, Donald refused to mess with history. It’s not just camaraderie; it’s replicating a winning formula. Over the last three iterations, the captain’s picks of European teams have earned 54.5% of available points. So, Donald had a blueprint he stuck to, and then he did some more.

On the ground, he repeated proven pairs. Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton for the first tee. You would think they would be worried. Well, watch how these two reacted to learn of the huge responsibility. Similarly, Donald paired Tommy Fleetwood and Rory McIlroy and picked the right opponents.

Rahm and Hatton went against Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Thomas. On the other hand, he once again sent Ludvig Aberg (albeit with a different playing partner than Rome) against Scottie Scheffler.

And they built early momentum on every match. Rory and Tommy set the tone by winning four of the first six holes in Friday's foursomes, followed by three of six on Saturday. Aberg took a similar lead early on as did Viktor Hovland and Robert MacIntyre. In match-play, leads can be tough to flip. The 2023 strategy was followed again at Bethpage, putting the Stars and Stripes under pressure. And it worked throughout Friday and Saturday and set the tone for a historic victory.

Watch: Justin Thomas can’t hide his frustration after learning of the Ryder Cup rule that offered both teams half a point without playing.

Wholesome

Those who have been to Bethpage understand the pain of trying to find relief from the rowdy crowds and humidity. Yet, some fans rose above the fray by being kind to the players. Especially to Rory McIlroy. After his ball landed near a grandstand, take a look at what this fan did to help him out. It was a welcome relief from the days of abuse he dealt with.

But you’d be wrong to think only Rory got that welcome relief. The European fans pulled a pretty shocking move to showcase their love and trust for Shane Lowry, the other severely heckled pro. These two guys take the best fans of Ryder Cup 2025 award easily.
