5William C. Campbell remained a lifelong amateur.
On May 5, 1923, William Cammack Campbell was born in Huntington, West Virginia. Following a stint in the army, where he served in WWII, he graduated from Princeton University in 1947, after enjoying stellar collegiate golf. But William had little desire to play professionally, so he stayed a lifelong amateur, with his greatest win coming in the 1964 U.S. Amateur. He was accomplished outside of it, too. Campbell is the only man to head both the United States Golf Association (1982-83) and the Royal & Ancient Golf Club (1987).
