Fearing Japanese invasion in 1940, the U.S. federal government leased 710 acres of San Diego's Torrey Pines mesa for $1 annually to establish an artillery training camp. Camp Callan launched in 1941 on the land where Torrey Pines GC now stands. Around 15,000 residents lived there, enjoying perks like movie theaters and chapels. By November 1945, mere months after Japan's surrender, the camp was surplus; the lease ended, and the government sold the buildings to San Diego for $200,000.

On Thursday at the Farmers Insurance Open, Tony Finau made the first ace of the PGA Tour season after finding the cup from 215 yards out on the par-3 16th. It’s the fourth of his career.
