PGA Tour Throws Pros Into Uncharted Territory

Oct 23, 2025 | Edition #215
👋 Hey Golf Fans,
The PGA Tour is heading to ancient mountains this week. The Bank of Utah Championship welcomes pros to rocky plains and tricky putting surfaces at the Black Desert Golf Course. We’ll deep dive into the course that was carved out of lava rocks, the revival of a fan-favorite golf show, a crazy ball heist, and more in today’s edition.
Onwards…

Rocky Test

Difficult to imagine a golf course hosting both PGA Tour and LPGA events? Look no further than this week’s Bank of Utah Championship. Measuring a substantial 7,421 yards, the par-71 course also hosted the LPGA’s Black Desert Championship this year.
Built on a lava field, the Tom Weiskopf design is exposed to the elements. Almost the entire back nine plays along the Snow Canyon State Park. Expectedly, wind is always a factor, and moderate elevations add to the challenge, meaning plenty of blind tee shots will keep pros on their toes.
Yes, water hazards are relatively scarce (only on two holes!), and fairways are extremely generous here, ranking second-easiest to hit last season. But you have bunkers and rock formations. And then rock formations INSIDE bunkers — we present one of the most unique sand traps in the history of golf.
On top of it, fast, undulating bentgrass greens offer another challenge. Last season, the greens ranked a daunting 4th in difficulty. So, great putters will have an advantage here. Which is what makes Maverick McNealy (21st in SG: Putting) one of the top choices this week. He also has seven top-10s this season.
Last year’s runner-up, Stephan Jaeger, might not be in his most inspiring form, but he has experience. Jaeger ranked 3rd in GIR, 16th in approach, and 18th in putting last time. Michael Thorbjornsen is in pretty great form as well, with four top tens, including a third-place finish at the Baycurrent Classic.
So, yes, the Bank of Utah Championship throws a unique challenge, and that means expect rare shots that you don’t get to see anywhere else.

Highs and Lows

Golf’s YouTube-ification is in full swing. After the PGA Tour announced a new tournament in collaboration with Good Good Golf — more on that here — Golf Channel took the next step. Mark your calendar for the return of a golf reality show from the early aughts.
Back with a bang: Yes, The Big Break is coming back. After being canceled over a decade ago, Golf Channel executives decided to give the fun golf reality show another go — this time with guys from Good Good Golf. The new season will air next year in August, likely bringing back the infamous ‘Glass Break’ challenge. Chi Chi Rodriguez once attempted this and took a painful hit in the wrong parts. Watch the most hilarious sports reality show moment of all time below:
Bigger and better: Increased putting surfaces. Bigger greens. New holes. Better graphics – name it, and we can bet Tiger Woods is listening when it comes to TGL. The second season will return on December 28, 2025. Expect some snazzy relocated ball-tracking camera towers and more behind-the-scenes coverage. So, you might again spot Tiger asking Charlie to toss him chicken fingers like he did last time.
Gone too soon: Sydney Barnes, a talented Millersville University golfer, passed away a week after she was struck by a vehicle. Barnes had played in 27 events and was a “cherished member” of the golf team. Just watch her in great spirits after making the first hole-in-one in Millersville golf history. Our deepest condolences to her family.
That catches you up with the latest news from the golf world. But before moving to anything else, we are curious to know…

Explosive Speed

Most golfers struggle to overcome neurological barriers in their swing. Hence, the clubhead speed rarely goes beyond 100 mph. But Bryson DeChambeau did break it to increase his swing speed from 118.37 mph to 133 mph – and once beyond 146 mph (that’s 207 mph ball speed), as you can watch here. Now that’s an unrealistic goal, but by following his method, you can easily gain 10-12 mph more.
At the top of the swing, turn your hips slightly to the right, which causes the left knee to move across.
Now, take a normal drive to find your baseline ball speed. Swing quickly and powerfully in a row, pushing yourself to about 10 mph above your baseline. You need to create a whipping motion to achieve that, exactly as Bryson demonstrates below:
Once you hit peak swing speed, lower it to a new baseline about 5 mph above the original. Then slowly push yourself again, increasing the speed by 3mph.
Continue this process till you reach the third baseline. This will help break your neurological speed barriers. And maybe once in a while, you will be able to hit like the pros did below:

Ball-Hunting

Remember that errant shot that cost you a ball? And maybe your reputation, too. But guess what? Someone just became famous off your misfortune. During a particularly stormy day, one guy who goes by the username, Teslamodel3owner88 on Reddit, went on a 20-minute ‘hunt’ near the water hazard. Can you guess the number of balls he pocketed? Let’s just say he will NEVER have to worry about losing a ball ever again— see for yourself the stash he has now.
