👋 {{readername | Hey, golf fans}},

And Friday served us the hottest meal (read: surprise) of the week. Both Nelly Korda and Scottie Scheffler are out of the race for their respective events. We also talk about the unsavory record they’ve set, plus a defending champ’s weird solution, Mi Hyang Lee’s godly shot, and more.

Let’s get started…

Bad day for Nelly and Scottie, but an awesome one for William.

Some 1,000 miles away from North Berwick, Nelly Korda (+1/MC), despite her outrageously good short game, failed to make a birdie on the final hole and missed the cut by one shot. First MC in two years, and according to Justin Ray, first time since the Rolex Rankings began in 2006 that both world No. 1s missed the cut on the same day. Surprisingly, and uncharacteristically, Korda refused to talk to the media after R2—more details here.

Wait, what? Call William Mouw (-9/T6) what you will because the night before R2 at Isco Championship, the defending champ dunked his putter in... boiling water. The flatstick stayed hot all day: seven birdies to a bogey-free 63, two strokes gained in putting, and 105 feet of putts rolled. Why would anyone do it? We’ll let him explain to you. Do we recommend it? No. Will it spawn a new trend? Without a doubt.

Curb your enthusiasm forgetfulness: Expect the unexpected from Larry David. The 79-year-old actor and comedian apparently forgot where he kept his clubs at the American Century Championship, a celebrity golf event. He and his crew scavenged for the missing clubs and could not find them—watch them standing, looking around in confusion.

This is really as cool as it gets.

Impossible: Mi Hyang Lee’s (+3/MC) second shot on the 18th scoffs at physics. She somehow hit an approach shot from the rough that bounced—yes, bounced—off the water and rolled onto the green. You won’t believe it until you watch it.

Electrifying: The gallery stood silent as Scotland’s native son, Robert MacIntyre (-7/T6), stared down a 31-foot birdie putt on the 15th. The decibels kept rising as the ball rolled and rolled to the cup. Then, it dropped, and the crowd went so wild you’d think the Highland bagpipes had started up. Watch and listen here.

Ice cream, please? In sweltering heat in France, cameras caught Charley Hull (-6/T5) getting an ice cream delivery via an on-course reporter. She had just nailed a brilliant approach on the 15th. Was she cooling off or celebrating? Neither. A TV reporter caught up with Hull on the fairway. Turns out it was from her boyfriend, but… not for her. Can you guess who it was for? Your answer lies in this short clip.

“Scorecards can never be embarrassing” - probably our colleague

For most weekend hackers, the most stressful part of playing golf is hitting the ball. Because neither you nor your buddy can predict where the ball will end up. It might be in a bush. Or the lone pond. But give it, well, a decade, and you might get over it.

What you might not get over is lugging a dual chipper. And getting caught. Or maybe carrying an ancient scorecard from a decade ago when you broke 80. As if it’s a holy relic and might work as a good luck charm. Got a similar embarrassing thing in your golf bag? Well, share it with the community. Who knows, you might find a twin?
