Until the late 1800s, golfers played the Old Course at St Andrews in a clockwise direction. It was only around 1870 that Old Tom Morris changed the game, separating the 1st and 17th greens and introducing an anticlockwise direction on alternate weeks. The quirky humps, hollows, bunkers, and run-offs you see today are actually leftovers from the original clockwise layout.
