Rage Alert: Morikawa's Press Meltdown

June 26, 2025 | Edition #159

 👋 Hey Golf Fans,

When the impossible becomes possible… that’s when golf gets interesting. Take Keegan Bradley winning and inching closer to becoming a playing Ryder Cup Captain earlier this week as an example. Something similar is probably in store for the Rocket Classic at Detroit Golf Club (which is weeks away from bulldozers tearing it up). Everyone expects one last birdie buffet, but will the DGC be that generous?

More on that and golf’s latest hot topic—Collin Morikawa's bizarre media meltdown. Oh, and we’re also starting ‘The Open Best Shot Series’ in today’s edition before we bust the myth about on-course fights. Let's get swinging...

One Last Time

This week's Rocket Classic (yes, they dropped the "Mortgage" for a cleaner look) marks the seventh and final edition at the Detroit Golf Club, we know. No, the PGA Tour isn’t dropping the course from its roster, but following the event's conclusion, architect Tyler Rae will begin a $16 million restoration of this 109-year-old Donald Ross masterpiece.

The 7,000-yard, par-72 layout will be completely reimagined by 2026. And so, the 156 pros are looking to savor every moment that’s left. Rocket Classic has been exceptionally generous since its debut in 2019. Every winner has celebrated at least 18-under par. The champions, in fact, have averaged a whopping 19.8-under so far. That’s nearly four strokes better than typical Tour venues!

The bentgrass beauty has four scoreable par-5s consistently, so that’s multiple eagles expected during a round. Then there’s also Donald Ross's characteristically wide fairways, making things all the easier.

But the course has one critical flaw, too. It floods after even just a little rainfall. And that’s despite it having HUGE drains in the fairways which swallow players’ balls whole— Watch Poor Akshay Bhatia trying to track down his Callaway after it happened to him.

Bhatia is back this year too, trying to avoid those fairway hole-in-ones and grab silverware instead. But the field is going to be tough to beat. It's headlined by World No. 5, Collin Morikawa, who's already found trouble this week (more on that below).

There’s also Keegan Bradley, who just won the Travelers Championship last week and is looking to climb those auto-qualification Ryder Cup spots. Patrick Cantlay, Ben Griffin, and Rickie Fowler are some other big names that are taking to the greens too.

So, it’s going to be one tough fight at Ross's generous masterpiece before its transformation. Who do you think is gonna come out on top?

Quote Controversy

Collin Morikawa just publicly attacked Golfweek's Adam Schupak on live television!

We’re not exaggerating, no. Morikawa was at a presser on Wednesday when Schupak asked him a question. The golfer, after a curt response, exploded at the reporter, claiming he had made him ‘sound bad’ in a recently published article.

This is what went down. Adam was writing a piece on Collin’s caddie change (here’s the truth about that swap), and was trying to interview the pro about it while he was on the course with his pro-am partner. In response, the World No. 5 then said, ‘Ask me anything you want in my press conference later, I'm with my pro-am partners now.’ Sounds fair enough, right?

But according to Morikawa, in the published piece, the reporter portrayed him in a bad light for that. Here’s the kicker, though:

Adam didn’t!

Now, of course, the article has since been updated, but we have a snippet of the original for you. Take a look at what Schupak initially wrote and published here. Does that sound like putting Morikawa down? Yet the golfer was furious.

Even after Adam cleared things up at the presser, saying he was actually giving him ‘credit’ for it, the two-time major winner refused to back down. Just look at how he snaps away at the reporter here:

Here's where it gets embarrassing for Collin Morikawa, though. The initial article does honestly read like Adam telling the world that the golfer is dedicated to his pro-am playing partners, which is exactly what sponsors, and Collin himself, too, want.

Notably, though, what Collin blew up for—a reporter approaching golfers on the course—was something he himself strongly claimed should be done, as you’ll see here.

But that’s the current golf and media scene for you. It’s players against the reporters. Rory’s recent shenanigans with the press point to the same, too. Tough times...

Birkdale's Miracle

The Open kicks off in four weeks. And, of course, we’re working on building the anticipation to golf's original championship, too, with our ‘major shot series’ returning. So today let’s break down one of the most impossible recoveries in major history.

Royal Birkdale's 13th hole, 2017. Spieth and Kuchar were tied for the lead when disaster struck. Spieth’s drive sailed 100 yards right into ankle-deep rough. And then he pulled off this miracle. A few hours later, he walked away with the Claret Jug in hand. So if you’re ever stuck in a similar place, here’s how to walk away from it like a champ:

  • Embrace the white flag: Don't attempt hero shots from impossible lies. Take your medicine with an unplayable lie when the smart play saves strokes.

  • Weaponize the rulebook: Study all relief options before taking a drop. Know every rule—they're your escape routes in crisis moments. Spieth himself claimed that right after his win.

  • Go full send: Once you commit to a recovery shot, swing with complete conviction. Half-hearted swings from trouble create bigger disasters, like Performance Psychology expert Dr. Joe Parent explains here:

Of course, don’t forget your drills and practice time in the rough. It’s the only thing that will help you get ready for the real thing… along with this read, of course:

Rickie Fowler loses his cool with yet another heckler as his nightmarish season reaches a dangerous breaking point.

Lydia Ko claims that Lexi Thompson and other LPGA stars are missing one crucial ingredient that could lead to them losing the Dow Championship.

Phil Mickelson’s reputation lies in ruins while Tiger is beloved despite being in deeper trouble. Why? Insider finally sheds light on the truth.

TikTok Meets Tee Box

Here’s a quick question: Do you think fights on the course are actually increasing, or is it social media that’s just making it seem that way?

Well, it’s a bit of both. Take this recent scenario, for example. A routine disagreement broke out on the course. You know, your regular slow-play arguments. But then, in seconds, the entire scenario escalated thanks to one of the players pulling out their phones and recording. Golf clubs became weapons, threats were exchanged, and an older golfer eventually threw a punch. Just watch the brawl go down here.

Now, whether such scenarios are real or staged, the only certainty is that course managers are put in an impossible position. There is the traditional pace-of-play issue. Then you have the modern problem of players treating fairways like content studios.

And, sadly, that’s the real crime here.
