Rare 55s Start Unique Week

 👋 Hey Golf Fans,

It’s raining 55s in Florida at the Grant Thornton Invitational. The pairs behind the dramatic (and historic) low scores are your usual suspects, so little surprise. We’ll look at the leaderboard, talk about the first round, and more. Meanwhile, Jon Rahm discusses becoming the first European to achieve an impressive feat, and YouTube has promised a cheaper option to watch golf.

Let’s get started…

Record Breaking

The Grant Thornton Invitational first round has certainly exceeded expectations. Yes, that tends to happen when you have benign weather and ideal scoring conditions, but the numbers at Tiburon Golf Club are surprising nonetheless.

Charley Hull and Michael Brennan’s scorecard looked flawless to a fault. They opened birdie-par, then drained three straight birdies. On the par-5 sixth, came the first eagle. That sparked seven birdies in a row, followed by an eagle on the par-5 14th. They stopped at 17-under 55 to stay at the top of the leaderboard.

Blame their team-building “exercise,” maybe. They named themselves “Gym Bros.” If you couldn’t guess the reason, this video of Hull’s intense workout will clear all doubts.

But the day wasn’t theirs alone. Right after them, Lexi Thompson and Wyndham Clark posted 17-under 55 to tie the first-round lead. This duo notched 13 birdies and a par on three holes. Their first eagle came on the same hole as Hull-Brennan (6th), then another on the 10th.

Meanwhile, they lead by two over Lauren Coughlin and Andrew Novak at 15-under. Rose Zhang-Michael Kim, Nelly Korda-Denny McCarthy, and Jennifer Kupcho-Chris Gotterup lurk one back. Defending champs Jake Knapp and Patty Tavatanakit carded seven-under through six, then made six more birdies for a 59, four off the pace.

Now that mixed-gender golf tees off at the 2028 Summer Olympics, Grant Thornton is proving to be more than just a fun outing. This is a unique event in the golf calendar and certainly calls for more big names to join the bandwagon.

Pride & Something More

In case you missed the important moments from the week, fear not. We’ve got you covered.

Awe: How long have you been in awe of your achievements? A week? Six months? Try two years and counting for Jon Rahm. In 2023, the Spaniard won the Masters for his second major (after the 2021 U.S. Open). Then he got to know he accomplished something McIlroy, Ballesteros, and Langer couldn’t manage. Can you guess what? Find out in the video below and notice Rahm’s reaction to it two years later…

Tough: Dylan Newman, golf pro from the Metropolitan PGA, just crushed Event No. 4 in the PGA Tournament Series. He fired a scorching final-round 9-under 63 on the Dye Course at PGA Golf Club, winning by 5 over Craig Isabel. Newman snagged last year’s money title ($17,332) for the third time since 2019. Check his buttery swing, and you'll be hooked, too.

Cheap: New sports-only cable package. Cheaper than ever. Access to ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, plus Fox Sports, Golf Channel, and more. No fluke. YouTube TV has announced a sports-specific bundle, letting you ditch bloated cable bills but keep the game-day action. Reports suggest the bundle is priced below the $82.99 base plan, but the exact figure is yet to be announced. Find more details here. And rejoice.

Massage

That big bucket of balls you just demolished? It didn't just dent your wallet and scores; it also wrecked your elbows with that death-grip club squeeze, bruising or tearing those poor muscles. Here's what physical therapist Dr. Jared Beckstrand suggests to keep them safe.

  • Apply lotion or any lubricant, like cocoa butter. Use the back of your knuckles or thumb to firmly stroke from elbow to wrist and back.

  • Introduce some cross-friction motion around your elbow using your thumb and forefinger just off the bony spot. Rub back-and-forth over tendons for 3-5 minutes.

  • Grab a butter knife handle (not blade), stroke from wrist up past elbow joint, and reverse. Target gritty adhesions with short strokes for 2-3 minutes. Watch how Jared does it below.

Follow this exercise to the T every day. Your elbow will thank you. And once you’ve nailed your grip on this one, try the other expert-proven exercises listed below.

Sick Beats

They say music doesn’t have a place in golf. But what about your backyard? Recently, Gabby Golf Girl — yeah, she teed off in the PGA Tour’s Creator Classic — teamed up with Lennie Simo to drop the next golf banger. As Gabby juggles the ball between her legs, Lennie bangs… pens to create music. But the best part was kept for the end. Gabby tossed the ball toward Lennie, and he did what!?

Still, be careful about playing music on a golf course. Rule 4.3(4) OKs background music, but what if you are listening to swing tips while playing a club tournament? Two-stroke penalty. Worse, you will lose the hole if it’s match-play. Repeat the mistake again, and you are disqualified. Poor luck.
