Remembering Tom Weiskopf's Legacy

Nov 08, 2025 | Edition #222

 👋 Hey Golf Fans,

It’s difficult to explain Tom Weiskopf and his importance to golf. Count all he’s done on your fingers and you’ll still fall short of capturing his actual impact. With his birthday approaching, we take a moment to honor the Open champion by revisiting his career, his long fight with cancer, and the architectural legacy that continues to shape how the game is played. We’ll also focus on Tommy Fleetwood’s rise, a 10-year-old’s inspiring fight against cancer, and more.

Let’s get started…

Legacy

Where does one begin to eulogize a legend like Tom Weiskopf? The man from Ohio left an indelible mark on golf: 16 Tour wins, one major, over 70 courses, and a decade-plus as a voice of the game. And of course, he was the owner of one of the purest swings in golf — bless your eyes with this rare footage.

Born in 1942, Tom enjoyed a standout career at Ohio State. But the real gems came out after he turned pro in 1964, his first Tour win in 1968, and his last in 1982. But his Annus Mirabilis was the year 1973, when he won seven times around the world.

Coincidentally, he lost his father to cancer the same year — a presage to Tom’s own battle against cancer. But he won five of the next eight tournaments he played, including his only major. In a way, crisis became Weiskopf’s unwitting muse. Especially outside the ropes.

It all began in 1982 when famed architect Jerry Nelson invited him to design a course. Though hesitant at first, a call to Jay Morrish changed everything. And Troon Country Club opened in 1986. Tom’s (and Morrish’s) crown jewel is arguably TPC Scottsdale, the host of the WM Phoenix Open. The Tour would go on to add another Weiskopf design to its roster, the Black Desert Golf Course.

Over the next few decades, multiple designs came into Tom’s hands (TPC Craig Ranch, Yellowstone Club, to name a few). Weiskopf and Morrish were also the first American duo to design a major championship-caliber course in Scotland (Loch Lomond). They are also credited with bringing back the drivable par-4 that has now become a staple in PGA Tour courses.

But fate dealt him a heavy hand in 2020, when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Weiskopf fought valiantly, went into remission in 2021, relapsed again, and passed away in 2022. Tomorrow, the world will celebrate what would have been his 83rd birthday. And it will remember him for multiple reasons.

Balance

Plenty has happened over the last few days in the golf world. Here, we’ve listed the top three stories that caught our eyes.

No LIV: Min Woo Lee is nowhere close to winning a major. So, the reports that he’s considering a move to LIV were baffling. The Saudi-backed circuit is a detour he doesn't need. Apparently, the talented Aussie thought the same. “I’m not going,” Lee said when asked about the LIV switch. Good for the PGA Tour. Not every day you get a star like Lee who can win trophies and juggle golf balls between his legs. Don’t believe us? Watch for yourself here.

Marvel: Tommy Fleetwood can’t stop playing well. After rounds of 64 & 68, Fleetwood is once again lurking near the top of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship leaderboard. He's now chasing 54-hole leader, Aaron Rai, who, en route to his 64 on Friday, made a rare albatross on the treacherous par-5 second hole. But the limelight was always on Rory McIlroy and Marco Penge. Two bombers, paired together for two rounds, turned every tee shot into an unofficial long-drive contest. And with this one shot, Rory proved why he still reigns supreme.

Warrior: 10-year-old Grant Carlson was diagnosed with T-Cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 2024. To raise funds for his treatment, a group of close family friends is hosting a golf tournament dubbed “Teeing Off Fore Grant” at San Vicente Golf Course on Friday, Nov. 14. Check how you can make a difference in his battle.

Well, that wraps up the last few days for you. But before moving to fix your game, share your thoughts on…

Flying Thumb

Most of us put the least thought into thumb placement and wonder why our slices never stop. Meanwhile, Tommy Fleetwood came up with a new ‘Flying Thumb’ technique — notice his subtle thumb movement in this slow-motion video — to fix his swing issues. Here’s what you can learn from him:

  • Keep the joints at the top of your thumbs, especially the trail-hand thumb, relaxed on the grip.

  • Midway through your backswing, lift your trail hand thumb off the shaft. This encourages external shoulder rotation, which is important for creating an inside-out swing path.

  • At the top of your swing, softly reconnect your thumb to the club shaft. Rest it, but do not put a chokehold on the club. Watch renowned coach Martin Hall demonstrate where amateurs go wrong while placing the thumb.

Essentially, this subtle movement promotes a natural inside path for the club, resulting in a controlled ball flight with better tempo. Once you’re comfortable with it, here are some other grips you can try.

Retro Red

Thirty-three years ago, a 16-year-old amateur named Tiger Woods teed off at the Genesis Invitational. The crowd was already enamored with the whiz kid. Even the venerable Sam Snead was swept up in the fervor. He even made a prophecy. You probably guessed it, so we won’t bore you with details. Instead, just feast your eyes on this grainy (but rare) clip of Snead and teenage Tiger.

To honor that debut, Sun Day Red has dropped a special ‘92 collection... a sartorial homage to history. Starter jacket, icon chain stitch hoodie, and that iconic Polo are some of the items on the list. And a bonus: Have you seen this picture of Tiger in his bedroom reading a book about St. Andrews with a photo of Jack Nicklaus hanging on the wall? All the more reason you should check it out.
