Rival Moves Rory with Clinical Golf

July 14, 2025 | Edition #167
👋 Hey Golf Fans,
What a thrilling weekend! Two underdog stories, two incredible finishes. Chris Gotterup stunned everyone yesterday by outlasting Rory McIlroy. But what happened afterward will stay with you for a long time. Pure class and sportsmanship! Meanwhile, Grace Kim claimed her maiden major in the most dramatic way possible. We’ll cover both in today’s edition, and oh, Jordan Spieth has a little family news to share with you all. So that too.
Buckle up...

Portrush Threat

Chris Gotterup shot a brilliant 4-under 66 yesterday, outlasting crowd favorite Rory McIlroy at the Genesis Scottish Open. The American made two bogeys and six birdies—equally distributed between front and back nine—to capture his second PGA Tour title.
Gotterup ranked 4th in SG: Off the Tee (+4.44), 4th in SG: Putting (+7.302)—a lethal combination of raw power and clutch execution. This is his biggest victory yet and came at one of the toughest fields in the Tour. The rewards are fitting as well:
Entry to Royal Portrush for the Open.
His first-ever Masters spot (2026).
A $1,575,000 winner’s paycheck.
The weight of it all hit him hard. When Amanda Balionis put the mic in front of him, he couldn’t hold back tears, as you will see here.
But only eight months ago, Gotterup was golf's forgotten man. Seven MCs in the first 10 events this season, he was hemorrhaging cuts and confidence. Then Gotterup switched his caddie.
The turnaround was spectacular. Eight top-30 finishes in his last nine starts, including four straight top-20s and a career-best T23 at the U.S. Open. Now Royal Portrush awaits, and his ability to fly the ball low and master the bump-and-run makes him a legitimate threat.
Grace on fire
On the LPGA front, Grace Kim's maiden major victory came with all the theatrics you'd expect. Trailing by two on the 72nd hole, the Australian made an eagle, forcing a playoff with Jeeno Thitikul. The drama continued. On the playoff hole, Kim pulled off an impossible chip-in for birdie from the penalty area. One hole later, she drained a 15-footer eagle to claim her first major. Yeah, even she needed some time to soak it all in.

Wild Weekend

Well, Grace Kim did steal the show yesterday. But someone else quietly made their own breakthrough as well. It probably slipped under your radar, but 21-year-old Lottie Woad officially secured her LPGA card after her gutsy T3 at Evian. Here are a few more such moments you missed from last week:
One of us: How many times have you screamed at a putt? Just begging it to go in? Well, you’re not alone. Scheffler too. Even gods bleed, apparently, as you will see here.
Lefty Rory: McIlroy had to settle for a runner-up, but he left no stone unturned. Even going left-handed to save par. How good is he? You have a look and judge for yourself.
Cursed replay: Golf tournament attendees need to fill out a form before entering. You will say the same after watching what happened to Nelly. The commentators' reactions say it all!
Free wheels: Nico Echavarria aced his way to a free car at the Genesis Scottish Open. Not a bad day at the office!
Buccaneer: Baker Mayfield knows how to keep fans happy. At the American Century Championship, fans handed the Bucs QB a can of beer. Watch what he did next.
With that, we are officially into the Open Championship week. It was a beautiful chaos the last four days. And links golf will unleash more in the coming days.

Pin Seekers

Grace Kim pulled off a drool-worthy 188-yard bomb on the 18th to force the playoff. It was majestic, as you can see here. But the truth is, most of us would’ve sprayed it way wide. That’s what separates the pros from us weekend hackers. The difference? They've mastered these three fundamentals:
Ditch death aim: Stop pointing your feet at the flag. Instead, align everything parallel to your target line—feet, knees, hips. That comes straight out of Rickie Fowler's approach playbook.
Ball-first: Sternum over ball, hands forward, weight shifting through impact. This creates that crispy compression that separates flushed irons from chunked disasters.
Compact kills power: Keep hands away from your body, tempo smooth. When pins hide behind bunkers, controlled precision will beat mindless bombing every single time.
These three tips cover the fundamentals. If you are ready to take your approach play a notch above, you’ve got your next read lined up below.

Spieth Squad Grows

Jordan Spieth just dropped the most adorable golf news of the week! Baby Sully has officially joined the Spieth family roster. Now we call it family, but he calls it ‘foursome’. Surely, you will get all the feels when you see the Instagram post Spieth did.
But picture this for a moment: three little Spieths running around Augusta at the Par-3 Contest while Dad tries to keep his composure. And if Sammy's swing genetics are any indicator—check for yourself—Augusta National better start preparing for some serious competition in about 15 years.
Few things hit better than a cold one after 18 holes. Whether you played lights-out or just enjoyed the walk, these three brews are perfect for that post-round unwind… or just for a quick refreshing sip.
Miller Lite: Light, crisp, and easy. It goes down smooth, no matter how your scorecard looked. And did you see their new ‘Pringles’ can!?
Coors: Refreshing with a Rocky Mountain chill… and pairs well with clubhouse laughs and sunburned shoulders. Look at all the different brews they have!
Heineken: Clean and just a little hoppy. It’s ideal for kicking back on the patio. This cocktail, moreover, gives it an even bigger kick.
