On December 31, 1951, the controversial 'Stymie Rule' was eliminated worldwide with the first joint USGA-R&A Rules of Golf taking effect in 1952. Under this rule, if one player's ball blocked another's line on the putting green, the interfering ball could only be marked if the balls were within six inches of each other. Otherwise, with more than six inches separating them, no marking was allowed. The player had to putt around or over the obstacle, leaving them "stymied." |
