Rory & Scottie Reveal Different Goals

July 10, 2025 | Edition #165

 👋 Hey Golf Fans,

Golf's birthplace, Scotland, has always bred two types of players—the artists who paint shots with pure instinct, and the scientists who calculate every variable. And so does this week’s Scottish Open field. At the other end of the continent, LPGA stars face a blend of grace and dread.

We’ll dive into both those, and also a fight that turned ugly on the course, a list of gorgeous golf influencers you should keep an eye on, a tip from Seve, and more in today’s edition. Let's tee off...

Gorgeous but Deadly

The Amundi Evian Championship returns to women’s golf’s most beautiful battlefield—The Champions Course at the Evian Resort Golf Club. But don’t be fooled, it’s gorgeous beauty… the course is as perilous as it is stunning.

It laughs at the concept of flat lies. Perched 480 meters above sea level, this 6,693-yard par-71 monster turns every shot into a death-defying sidehill riddle sliding toward the lake below. The signature par-3 2nd hole depicts this perfectly with a severe downhill slope, making distance judgment a nightmare.

And then there’s also the historic trend that’s working against a couple of pros.

You see, since becoming a major in 2013, the Evian Championship has not once seen a repeat victor. That’s good news for the likes of Nelly Korda—who’s still looking for her first win this season, and Jeeno Thitikul—who has one win and 6 more top 10s this year. Sadly, though, the trend spells disappointment for some big names like defending champ Ayaka Furue, Lydia Ko (2015 winner), and Minjee Lee (2021 winner).

They all still have a shot at driving home in a Porsche Taycan Turbo S this year, though. All any of them need is to ace the treacherous par-3 16th, like Jodi Ewart Shadoff did last year.

Back to the field, though, there are some huge established stars present this year… but the biggest storyline is still that of 21-year-old amateur Lottie Woad!

She annihilated the Women's Irish Open field by six shots just last week, and just week before that grabbed a top-30 finish at the U.S. Women’s Open. A top-25 finish will see her earn enough points to grab her LPGA membership. It’s not easy, but hey, that’s golf for you.

Good luck, ladies.

Bite Back On the Course

Not all short games are built the same… but Cobra’s Snakebite lineup has a wedge for every kind of player. With three distinct styles built for spin, control, and confidence, there's one to match your game. And right now, they’re all 20% off—plus free delivery!

  1. The Snakebite Black Wedge

Sleek, aggressive, and tour-ready. The black finish isn’t just for looks either! It cuts glare, while Snakebite groove tech gives you that extra edge around the greens.

  2. The Snakebite Wedge

The classic. Chrome finish, precision grooves, and versatile grinds for all turf types. If feel and control are your thing, this one’s dialed in.

  3. The Snakebite X Wedge

Newer to the short game? This one’s got your back. A forgiving cavity-back design adds help on mishits, making short shots feel a whole lot simpler.

Whatever your style, there’s a wedge in this trio that’ll bite hard. So, find your fit and avail your 20% off now.

Two (Brilliant) Minds

Something's different about Rory McIlroy.

And no, we’re not talking about his fresh new buzz cut that has the entire golf world buzzing, saying he looks 15 years older now. Look at his latest hairstyle here, and tell us if you feel the same!

It’s maybe definitely the two-week break that has the Career Grand Slam champion returning, relaxed, rejuvenated, and REAL. On Wednesday, he got to talking about ‘longevity’ in the sport.

“Once you get there [the top]… it takes just as much work, if not more work, to stay there,” he said. He even had a comment about Scottie - Diss or praise? Watch it here and decide. But Rory intends to put in the work for it and compete at that level.

And then there’s Scheffler. Longevity is the last thing on his mind. He’s just looking at ‘now’. He’s not on the field to prep for The Open, or to add more points under his belt… the World No. 1 is out in Scotland to be ‘creative’.

And today, he put his money where his mouth is. Just look at the eagle he pulled off at the very first hole. Despite the cold. Despite the wind that you can clearly hear!

Yesterday, Scottie said that he loves the fact that he needs to carry 5 clubs instead of 2 (in America) for around the green here. He loves trying to find his way through the wind and the daunting weather. “There's always a shot to be played," he said. Well, he’s doing it too.

So there you have it.

The two best players in the world. In the same field. With two very different goals. Each has a major this year. Both have the drive, but with very different goals.

"I'd like to think of myself more as an artist than a scientist," said Rory. Scottie’s taken the exact opposite approach this week. We wouldn’t bet against either… but in the end, there can be only one winner.

Bare It

Most golfers panic when they find a car park. Seve Ballesteros? He saw an opportunity. Royal Lytham. 16th hole. 1979 Open Championship. The European legend drove the ball into a temporary car park. Now that should've spelled disaster. But the Spanish wizard got his free drop, grabbed a wedge, and pulled off this brilliant shot despite a bare lie.

We broke down his shot, and it turns out, it’s easier to play those bald spots than you’d think. Here’s how:

  • Right Position: Place your ball toward your back foot and press your hands ahead at address. Keep 70% of your weight on your front foot. Watch how legendary Hale Irwin does it.

  • Take more club: The ball flies lower and releases more from tight lies. Grab an extra club and make a controlled swing.

  • Divot away: Tentative swings from bare lies create disasters. So don't try to pick the ball clean - hit down and through and take turf after the ball without hesitation. PGA pro Luther Blacklock demonstrates how:

Master these, and whether your ball lands on a bare fairway spot or an unfavourable lie, you’ll have nothing to worry about. And if you think you have that under control, try some more tips from the European legend.

Ouch

Ever wonder what happens when someone picks a fight with the wrong guy at the golf course? One poor soul in Canada just found out the hard way… And it's brutal to watch!

An argument escalated on the course, and one golfer confidently decided to drop his golf glove and settle things with his fists. Bad idea. Turns out the man he picked a fight with is a former NHL enforcer, Nick Tarnasky.

Profanity. Punches thrown. Players shoved in a pond. The footage of the incident is absolutely wild, like you’ll see here.

So remember, golf etiquette matters. And if you’re going to avoid it, maybe Google who you’re up against first, huh?
