Rory Sits Out, and It’s a Genius Move

Aug 02, 2025 | Edition #178
👋 Hey Golf Fans,
The FedEx Cup playoffs are getting closer and closer. While the Tour's $100 million bonus pool stayed flat, they’ve completely reshuffled how it’s paid out, like you’ll see here. And it all starts at the FedEx St. Jude Championship next week. Many hopes and dreams will hang in the balance, but not Rory McIlroy’s. He decided to give it a miss. Not an injury, but a strategic move as we will explain below.
Along with that, we will also talk about Nelly Korda’s precarious situation and the most inspiring underdog story that'll restore your faith in this beautiful game.
Let's tee off...

Bolt from the Blue

Rory McIlroy has decided to skip next week's FedEx St. Jude Championship. A first since 2018. Surprising, yes. But you should’ve expected this. TPC Southwind has been McIlroy's kryptonite. Last year's T68 was a disaster of epic proportions. His performance was historically awful: second-worst driving (-4.015) and third-worst putting (-7.833).
The truth is, Ron Prichard’s par-70, 7,244-yard layout punishes the very thing that makes Rory special. Those claustrophobic fairways strangle his aggressive driving. Indeed, there are only a few areas of the course where Rory’s tee-shot hasn’t landed.
Under the canopies? Check.
Water hazards? Check.
Bouncing off the crown of a tree? Check. No, we’re not kidding—watch it here!
But… this time, it’s no lazy scheduling. It’s just a smart play. Sitting pretty at No. 2 in the FedEx Cup standings (3,444 points), McIlroy has virtually zero risk of missing the BMW Championship. So, why bother?
Instead, he can take another week off and land in Maryland all revitalized—he has never finished outside the top 20 there. After that, there is the Tour Championship at East Lake, his stomping ground.
To note: The new FedEx Cup format has done away with starting strokes. So, everyone tees off even at East Lake now. And McIlroy owns three FedEx Cup titles, mind you. In fact, last year, just two weeks after the St.Jude blunder, Rory netted a T9 at the Tour Championship.
So this calculated rest has a bigger purpose. With a career Grand Slam already secured, McIlroy is chasing history. A record fourth FedEx Cup would leave everyone else biting the dust. As they say, sometimes the best strategy is knowing when to sit out.

Hearts vs Rankings

Just 0.1868 points separate World No.1, Nelly Korda, and No.2, Jeeno Thitikul. After 71 consecutive weeks at the top, Nelly Korda has never been closer to getting dethroned.
Ironically, it has come to a point where Korda can succumb to Thitikul even if she finishes ahead of the Thai phenom at the AIG Women’s Open. And even more ironically, Nelly is firing on all cylinders at the major like you’ll watch here.
Korda is yet to sniff victory this season. But here is where it gets interesting. It’s not that her performance has drastically fallen off the charts:
Scoring Average: 69.56 (2024) vs. 69.61 (2025)
Strokes Gained Total: 2.84 (2024) vs 2.31 (2025)
Greens in Regulation: 76.02% (2024) vs. 73.64% (2025)
Yet she hasn't won a single tournament in 2025, making her 71-week reign vulnerable to outside threats. Her swing (how can we ignore that, right?) is as pure as ever. Her distinctive tempo remains flawless. That creates unmatched ball-striking precision.
The secret, though, lies in her signature wrist position as you can watch (and learn) below:
Korda has made every cut since her devastating 2024 KPMG PGA Championship meltdown, showcasing remarkable resilience. And that mental fortitude faces its sternest test yet. Thitikul has won twice this season. She now leads the Race to CME Globe standings with momentum building toward the season finale.
But here's what the rankings & stats can't measure in tangible terms: fan loyalty. Why else would a little girl walk up and give her a gift? You’ll never guess what it was! Her appreciation for supporters who follow her for hours shows a perspective beyond mere competition. That devotion grows more impressive considering what she's enduring.
The mathematics favors change, but the hearts remain loyal. Jeeno might claim the ranking, but Nelly keeps the fans.

Grip Game

Ever wonder why so many weekend golfers struggle with wrist pain after just nine holes? The problem isn't your swing mechanics—it's grip strength. Most amateurs don't realize how quickly their grip weakens during a round, causing hilarious mishits like this one. If you don’t want to face a similar trouble, you've got to add this towel grip suitcase carry drill into your fitness regimen:
Set up smart: Loop a towel through a kettlebell handle and grab it with your thumb pointing straight down.
Switch it up: Flip your grip so your thumb points upward, letting the weight hang naturally. This trains the opposite wrist position, building balanced strength that prevents injury, as fitness coach Natalie Kollars demonstrates here.
Walk and strengthen: Carry the weight for 30 seconds in each position, walking 25 feet out and back. Your wrists will build strength to handle any tough lie on the course.
Start with 15-25 pounds and do this three times a week. You'll notice stronger and more confident swings. When you are ready to elevate your game, these three drills should be your next go-to.

Inspiration

A swing that comes close to Nelly's? Let us present to you Tommy Morrissey's golf swing. Born with only one arm, Tommy became a golf prodigy by age three. He's won 37 tournaments against able-bodied competitors and finished 7th at the US Kids World Championship.
Fast forward to today, the 14-year-old crushes 265-yard drives with a 1.48 smash factor that rivals the pros! Just watch him nail these drool-worthy shots here. His athletic gifts extend beyond the fairway, too.
Tommy excels at baseball, hitting two home runs at Cooperstown and inspiring millions with videos like this Happy Gilmore tribute that went viral. Here's the real beauty of golf, though. It's not about shooting under par or making hole-in-ones; it's simply about trying! Tommy's philosophy says it best: "You against the course," not against anyone's doubts. That's exactly what we all keep doing, showing up and proving that heart beats everything else!
