Rory Swings Once. Two Balls Fly.

July 20, 2025 | Edition #171

 👋 Hey Golf Fans,

Good morning, and welcome to Championship Sunday. The road to becoming Champion Golfer of the Year is still open. But it doesn’t look like the World No. 1 will let anyone come near the Claret Jug, let alone sniff victory. Before you tune in to what looks like Scottie’s victory walk, we’ll catch you up with everything that transpired on Saturday. Let’s start swinging…

As Good as It Gets

For the record, the chance to lift the Claret Jug is still open to at least five players, including Li Haotong, Matt Fitzpatrick, Rory McIlroy, and Xander Schauffele. Yesterday, both Xander and Rory shot a 5-under 66, trying to gnaw at Scheffler’s lead. The World No.1 needed to do something extraordinary.

And so…

Scheffler shot a bogey-free 67. But you know what’s more staggering? He hit barely 7 of the 14 fairways. And yet his scorecard has two birdies, one eagle, and seven straight par-saves. One of which came at the 11th, where he landed in the bush near the green. A bogey was guaranteed; a double, a real possibility.

But, with bent knees, a hunched back, and an open clubface, Scottie gave us an all-time par-save — watch his marvellous wizardry (or black magic) here.

  • If Scheffler wins today, he will join Woods, Nicklaus, and Player as the only fourth golfer to win the Masters, PGA, and Open before 30.

  • If he wins by four, Scottie will be the first player since World War I to win each of the first four majors by more than three strokes.

  • A final round 65 will tie him with Henrik Stenson’s 264 (2016, Royal Troon), the lowest Sunday total at the Open.

Now, Paul Lawrie made a remarkable 10-shot comeback at the 1999 Open (Carnoustie). So the ones on his tail still have a shot. But will Scottie let it happen? Well, this is the 9th time Scheffler is holding a 54-hole lead. And not once yet has he lost an event while doing so. He’s leading by 4 this time around.

So, McIlroy, Fitzpatrick, Li, Hatton, Schauffele, and the rest of the chasers… You'd better start praying.

Miras!

In between Rory’s charge and Scottie’s steady defense, a lot happened on moving day. Some you might have caught in the broadcast, some you didn’t. From cold shanks to magic tricks, here are five more moments like this:

Warning: A fan wanted to remind Scottie of a lurking danger. So, on his second shot at the very first hole, the man—in a very Northern Irish accent—yelled out an uncalled-for but hilarious warning at Sheffler. Watch the viral footage of it here!

Mad: When back-to-back bad shots came to haunt Robert MacIntyre, he gave in to the frustration. His mishit at the 14th was the last straw. A huge club slam followed… one that literally bounced sky-high like you’ll see here.

Magic: On the 11th hole, McIlroy smashed his approach from 151 yards, hoping for a birdie. But the ball jumped and landed right on his feet. Whiff? No, sir. On his follow-through, McIlroy unearthed a SECOND ball that was embedded deep in the mud—he actually hit TWO balls in one shot. You've got to watch it to believe it.

Ace alert: Hole 13. 192 yards. An 8-iron. England’s John Perry did everything right yesterday, and the reward was sweet: we present you, the first hole-in-one of the 153rd Open Championship.

Stone cold: Unlike MacIntyre, Justin Rose was calm in the face of mishits. The Englishman had a rollercoaster round carding a 3-under 68 with eight birdies, three bogeys, and a double. Oh, he also shanked it a few times — on 8th and 11th. And Rose himself compiled these shanks together in this clip for everyone to say ‘relatable’.

The final round is already underway. We’ll be back later in the day with more such updates from the Championship Sunday at Royal Portrush. Stay tuned, and meanwhile tell us…

Scheffler Slayer(?)

Someone's been busy on Wikipedia. Haotong Li's nickname has now been updated to "Scheffler Slayer" by some ambitious fan! Hilariously enough, though, Li himself didn’t get this memo. Hear what he had to say about going up against Scottie on Sunday.

The 29-year-old who’s 4 strokes behind Scottie has seen a massive glow-up this week. Li was ranked 300th in the world just a couple of months ago. He was basically invisible. Now, he’ll be teeing off alongside the World No. 1 on the final day’s final pairing, in the hope of beating him (no matter what he said in the interview).

Li’s representing China's best hope for a first men's major in golf. He’s been rock-solid through the three rounds with back-to-back-to-back 67s. The 4-time European Tour winner even almost holed an ace like you’ll see here. Moreover, he went bogey-free on Thursday and has carded only 3 since.

He’s definitely going to have a lot of eyes on him today (ours included). Zhù nǐ hǎo yùn Haotong Li.

Raucous

A local shopkeeper provided us with his conservative estimate: the population of Portrush is around 6,500. Almost 60 percent of them have left the town this week. Why, you ask? Even for the small homeowner, it could fetch them as much as GBP3,000 (roughly $4000) to rent out their houses, which would pay for several months’ mortgage.

But Portrush is hardly a ghost town.

It’s teeming with humanity, taken over by people from all over the globe. There were fans dressed up in the UK’s Union Jack colours. We’ve seen a few walking Aussie flags as well, although our ‘Stars and Stripes’ has been rather conspicuous in its absence.

Nevertheless, even a blind man knows that McIlroy has the greatest support here. The Irish fans, especially with a few Guinness down their system, can be louder than a jet engine in full thrust. The roar that went up when he eagled the 12th yesterday could have woken up the dead at the nearby Ballywillan Cemetery. Just listen to how loud it was here!

However, here’s the thing: they have been very fair and haven’t been disrespectful to other players. And that’s what is making watching the Open all the more pleasurable.

The 2025 Open has us wanting to witness that Irish spirit. And it turns out, you don’t actually have to cross the Atlantic to do so. Here are three U.S.-based Irish festivals that bring home all the music, dancing, and Guinness you could ask for!

  1. Dublin Irish Festival: One of the largest Irish festivals in the country. Think Irish dancing, whiskey tastings, and world-class folk bands, all conveniently in Ohio. Just look at all there is to do there!

  2. Milwaukee Irish Fest: A lakeside celebration of everything Irish. This event in Wisconsin had over 100 acts on 16 stages. It’s perfect for family time, like you’ll see here.

  3. Peoria Irish Fest: Smaller… but with a big heart, with kilts, crafts, and so much more. This warm Midwestern take on Irish pride is now just a month away.
