Rose’s Thank You Said More Than Records

Feb 02, 2026 | Edition #258

 👋 Hey Golf Fans,

On Sunday at Torrey Pines, Justin Rose proved he's golf's ageless wonder. His dominance on the course was equally matched by his warmth off it. We’ll talk about his performance, the records he broke, Brooks’s perfect shot, LPGA’s blunder, a stroke-play concession, and more.

Today is also the day of the big reveal, so don’t forget to check out our Essentially Golf Leaderboard.

Let’s get started…

Wonder

A lot can be said about Justin Rose’s epic victory yesterday. But let's start with what he did while walking the 18th because that’s what embodies the man. The cameras were tracking him. Rose stopped, walked up to the camera, and gave a shout-out to Lordie. No, that’s not his current caddie.

Gareth “Lordie” Lord was his looper the last time he won here (2019). That’s Justin Rose. He never forgets the people he walks with on the green. He honors them. His current caddie, Mark “Fooch” Fulcher, was hospitalized during that 2019 triumph. So, guess who Rose dedicated this victory to? Yep, it’s Fooch. Not his only kind act of the week.

Rose, 45, started the week with a 62 and never let rivals get within shouting distance. He stretched his lead round by round. One shot, then four, six, and capped it with a seven-shot triumph. Aside from setting the scoring record at 23-under, he reached multiple milestones:

  • Oldest wire-to-wire winner since Rocco Mediate (2010)

  • Oldest player to win by 6 strokes or more since Sam Snead (1961)

  • Ninth player to have 13 PGA Tour victories, including a FedExCup

Rose also became the first wire-to-wire winner (without ties) of the tournament since Tommy Bolt (1955). And his seven-shot victory is the largest since Tiger Woods’s in 2008. Rose gained a whopping 18.88 strokes over the field. You couldn't help but root for the guy!

Bigger Picture: Si Woo Kim, Ryo Hisatsune, and Pierceson Coody tied for second. Joel Dahmen, who got into the field as a first alternate, bagged a T7. Meanwhile, the PGA Tour’s “Prodigal Son” Brooks Koepka finished at T56.

Thriller

Shot of the Week: On Saturday at Torrey Pines, Brooks Koepka's drive on the 1st landed on the cart path. Not wanting to take relief, the five-time major winner hit an almighty recovery shot. Result? The ball landed only 11 feet from the pin. We present to you the best shot from this week.

Moment of the Week: At the Bahrain Championship, Calum Hill did something that surprised everyone. In the second playoff hole against Freddy Schott, he conceded to hand the German his first DP World Tour victory—watch the rare moment here. It also raised calls of DQ (more on that later), but in his defense, he was facing a triple bogey while Schott was within eight feet of the pin. Hill also shanked his second shot, which smacked into the giant screen, which was showing him watching his shank. We will leave the clip for you to watch and realize the absurdity of the situation.

Fan of the Week: Sahith Theegala was clueless about the “surprise” his family sprang on him Saturday morning. Six family members and friends ambushed him, wearing fresh blue T-shirts with four words etched on them. Can you guess the reason? No, not his birthday or engagement. Here is your answer.

Quote of the Week: Just like us, Joel Dahmen, Rose’s nearest competitor, was left gobsmacked by the 45-year-old’s dominance. Was there a way Rose could be stopped? Well, Dahmen didn’t miss a bit before dropping this gem of a one-liner.

Blunder of the Week: LPGA’s season-opener HGV Tournament of Champions was cut short to 54 holes due to high winds and an adverse “competitive environment.” Nelly Korda was crowned the champion. The catch? Celebrities played nine holes on Sunday. Annika Sorenstam was puzzled as to why players were not allowed to. The decision didn’t sit well with anyone, and Lydia Ko didn’t hide her frustration either.

Around the World

Korn Ferry Tour: Ian Holt (3-under 67) triumphed at the Panama Championship, becoming the first KFT pro to win twice in the first three events of the season. He's also the first back-to-back winner on KFT since Harry Higgs in 2024. Meanwhile, Adam Hadwin, the PGA Tour winner who lost his card last year, finished solo second. Holt's now one win shy of a PGA Tour promotion, and guess who was more fired up than the man himself? His wife—you can hear her scream in the video below.

HotelPlanner Tour: At the season-opening SDC Open in South Africa, MJ Viljoen (2-under 70) survived a playoff to snag his first HotelPlanner Tour title. He started the day one shot back but birdied the 18th in regulation to force the playoff against countryman Deon Germishuys. Viljoen also birdied the first playoff hole to secure the victory. The loud yell and the fist pump will tell you what this win meant for him.

Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia: The Webex Players Series Murray River was bonkers, to put it mildly. Kangaroos were hopping around on the greens. A pro was… catching “river monsters” mid-round! But nothing topped Haydn Barron holing a nervy putt to win by one stroke over Jimmy Zheng. Watch the wild celebrations that followed. Meanwhile, Tom Ryan secured a nine-shot win over Noah Schammer in the All Abilities competition; Fuyu Yang won the juniors title.

Rare

While Calum Hill’s generous act of conceding the playoff was applauded, it also caused some controversy. Armchair rules officials called for his DQ, as you can find out here. But in moments like this, official guideline comes in handy, and here is what it says:

  1. To answer the most obvious question first, can you concede a playoff? Yes, you’re allowed to. The rule clearly states that if two players are in a playoff, one is allowed to concede.

  2. Does that mean the other player needs to finish the hole still? The rule is pretty forthright here: the other player doesn't need to complete the playoff hole.

  3. But, and it applies to both stroke-play and match-play, you cannot agree to concede to each other to shorten the match. If Hill and Schott agreed beforehand—yes, it sounds absurd—both would’ve been disqualified.

Generally, however, concession in stroke-play is virtually unheard of, hence the uproar and confusion among the fans. Below, we have listed a few more confusing rules that you should be aware of.

Energy in the course doesn’t come from gimmicks. Here’s how five elite golfers keep themselves fueled when the round stretches long.

  1. Scottie Scheffler — Drinks Kombucha, a steady, low-key pick that keeps things light and balanced. You can buy yours here.

  2. Rory McIlroy — Munches on Transparent Labs Protein+ Bar for reliable fuel. Check it out here.

  3. Nelly Korda — Drinks LivPur Nutrition, a performance-focused supplement that supports endurance. Watch her prepare the shake.

  4. Tiger Woods — Peanut Butter Sandwich is a staple for Tiger on the greens. Listen to Tiger explaining why he loves it.

  5. Lexi Thompson — Keeps Quest Protein Bars with her all the time. You can buy them here.
