Scottie’s 'NO' Silences the Room

Aug 14, 2025 | Edition #183

 👋 Hey Golf Fans,

The BMW Championship kicks off today at Caves Valley, and things got interesting quickly in Maryland. The course already had pros scratching their heads. Then Scottie showed a different, slightly spicy side in the press room, and some surprise celeb appearances at the Pro-Am got everyone talking. Plenty to unpack this week.

So, let's get started...

Nuclear Makeover

Back in 2021, Patrick Cantlay torched Caves Valley at 27-under. He praised the course but also mentioned that there are basically no hazards. The course managers took note and sprang into action.

A 103-day renovation project began. The overhaul on one particular hole alone gives you an idea of the scale and scope of it. 45,000 cubic feet of dirt were moved from the first hole. Overall, it’s a story of massive change:

  • The gentle 365-yard opening hole is now a stern 481-yard beast.

  • The rough is at 4+ inches, and greens have been reduced to an average of 5200 sq. ft.

  • The par-72 layout shrunk to par-70 but stretched to 7,601 yards.

So, when course superintendent Kyle Steidel said it looked like a “bomb went off” on the course, he very much meant it. Just watch these visuals of before and after the renovation, and you will see he wasn’t exaggerating at all.

Every green complex got completely rebuilt with firmer bentgrass surfaces, and were brought closer to the hazards. Take the drivable par-4 5th. It has become particularly notorious thanks to the cavernous penalty areas surrounding the shallow green.

So power hitters like Rory need to be cautious. But he has had a long rest, so fresh legs could be decisive. Regardless, it’s hard to put anyone ahead when Scottie is in the field. That too after a T3 last week despite not having his good Samaritan, Ted Scott, on the bag.

On the other hand, the stakes couldn't be higher for the bubble boys. Only the top 30 advance to East Lake, leaving Viktor Hovland, Akshay Bhatia, and Lucas Glover sweating at the edge. So, the BMW Championship promises drama. And looks like it will deliver.

Polite Anger

Pressure was already mounting. Scottie Scheffler walked into Wednesday's BMW Championship media room carrying the weight of last week's near-miss, where Ted Scott's Saturday night departure for a family emergency preceded a one-shot loss. Scottie almost drop-kicked his club before restraining himself, as you can see here.

Then, when he arrived in Maryland, questions started flying.

First, about adjusting to the new caddie. The dynamics. Then it got a bit more personal. What happened to Ted Scott? When will he be back? Next week? We could sense the frustration on his face, and he didn’t hide it either, as his very pointed answer will tell you. And then came a few straight Ryder Cup questions.

Keegan’s captaincy. The potential shape of the team. His responses turned ice-cold with each follow-up question. The last one — about his expectation for the Bethpage Black atmosphere — was the final straw.

Scheffler paused for a second. Just look at his eyes in the clip below; you can sense that exasperation reached a boiling point. But what did come out will actually leave you with a greater sense of regard for the World No.1. Watch his brilliant response to a “ridiculous” question here.

Now, Scheffler’s anger and frustration are confined to the greens. He might snap his club, but won’t snap at his caddie. In fact, Ted Scott’s words here reveal how Scheffler resorted to his Faith during his 2024 arrest, choosing forgiveness over anger despite the chaos.

Yesterday, he essentially gave reporters a choice: focus on this week's tournament or watch him walk away to the range. The result was visible instantly after his pointed ultimatum.

Can you really blame him? We can’t.

Rory's Swing Secret

Ever wonder how Rory swings so elegantly and explosively with his 5'9" frame? Most amateurs swing harder without setup changes. Meanwhile, Rory focuses on position and explosive movement as he teaches a famous golf influencer here. But there is more to it than meets the eye:

  • Set up for speed: Move the ball forward in your stance, almost off your front foot. Then, widen your base. This gives you balance when swinging hard, as legendary coach Pete Cowen explains here.

  • Fire your lower body: Aggressively use your lower body through impact. The Ulsterman likes to "fire" his right hip at the ball. Watch Rory demonstrate his explosive hip action below.

  • Train for speed: In the range, forget where the ball goes temporarily. Just swing as fast as possible to unlock higher speeds. Once you find new speed potential, work on regaining control.

Practice these moves precisely as Rory demonstrates. And once you are down with that, you can read more about his advanced swing secrets below.

Phil and Tiger share similar traits, but no one is willing to talk about that. Former caddie shines new light on two legends.

Burnin’ up

Rickie Fowler and Ludvig Aberg didn’t expect this. Certainly not from their pro-am partners. And they were also not just anybody. Pop icon Nick Jonas played alongside Rickie Fowler on Wednesday. Kevin paired up with Ludvig Åberg. The guys probably thought they'd get some support from their celebrity teammates.

Think again!

When a reporter asked the pop stars for their BMW Championship picks, they completely bypassed their playing partners. Instead, they went straight to… check out who they actually picked to win.

Now, Rickie sits at 48th in the FedEx Cup standings, desperately needing a strong week. Meanwhile, Ludvig's doing better at 13th but still fighting for Tour Championship spots. They could’ve used a bit of motivation there.

But you can't blame the Jonas Brothers for being honest. They chose cold, hard facts over friendship and loyalty. We will know if they were right in a few days’ time.
