Palmer was a key player behind the revitalization of The Open.
65 years ago on July 15, 1961, Arnold Palmer defeated Dai Rees by one stroke to win The Open at Royal Birkdale. It was Palmer’s first Open victory, but perhaps the most memorable one. After returning to the USA, Palmer encouraged his fellow American players to come and play the event. And many of them did in the following years, making The Open an essential part of the schedule.
