Spaun Wins While Rory and Scottie Go Berserk

June 16, 2025 | Edition #154
👋 Hey Golf Fans,
Let’s start by thanking the volunteers at Oakmont, whose tremendous effort saved us from a dreadful Monday finish. They towelled off the greens to keep them playable. Literally, as you can see in this rare clip here. In retrospect, that break was needed to get things interesting.
A detailed look at the final round, five missed moments, and Charlie’s Father’s Day note to Tiger is in today’s edition. Let’s tee off…

Underdog

Let’s be honest: even if someone gave you a $100K to bet on the U.S. Open champ, you wouldn’t have picked JJ Spaun over Adam Scott and Sam Burns. Certainly not after Spaun bogeyed five times in the front nine and made the turn at 40.
And yet.
Spaun—with his stoic composure and humble gait—shot 2-over 72 to conquer Oakmont. The only player to finish under par after four gruelling days. The only player to finish birdie-birdie to win at Oakmont since Ben Hogan in 1953.
Spaun walked on the 18th with a solo lead at even par. A bogey would’ve tied him with Robert MacIntyre at 1-over. Par would’ve sealed the deal. But Spaun chose neither. He drained a 64-footer for birdie—the longest putt made at this year’s U.S. Open.
He danced with his caddie, tears and rain mixing, while his wife and daughters yelled from the stands. Watch his life-changing few seconds here. It was the perfect Father’s Day for Spaun. Just the night before, he stayed up caring for his younger daughter, Violet, who had a stomach bug. Surely the U.S. Open trophy is good enough medicine now?
But the start was inauspicious. Even though all the bigwigs, Burns, Scott, and Hovland, looked shaky from the get-go, the battle was supposed to be between the three. Then it rained. The final round was suspended. And Spaun came back with new vigor, as others lost momentum.
At one point on the back nine, five players were tied for the lead—Hatton, Scott, Ortiz, Burns, and Spaun.
But misfortune befell them all. Ortiz doubled on the 15th. Burns did too, after his controversial relief denial (more on it below). Hatton went bogey-bogey on the last two holes. Scott played 14th to 16th at 4-over par.
While they all crumbled, Spaun kept calm. He played the back nine 3 under (compared to his 5 over front) and took home his first major and second career win. Regardless of which way Spaun’s career pans out, this late evening at Oakmont on Father’s Day will be the most iconic.
We don’t doubt it. Neither does he.

Anger, Despair, and Class

You probably watched Spaun’s spectacular drive on the 17th, or his 64-footer putt, but did you see how Rory turned his club into a boomerang, or Hatton losing it? Here are those and more in the final round’s missed moments:
Waterball (Somewhat): Just how watery was Oakmont today? Sam Burns was denied a casual water relief, but later this ‘soaking’ visual of the spot he was in emerged. Think the officials got this one wrong?
Hothead: Hatton was all smiles for most of the final round. Until he landed on deep rough on the side of a bunker. And his next shot took him only to the rough on the other side. His inner devil finally came forth then!
Clubslam: Rory has perfected the art of clubslamming. After hurling it like a javelin and then breaking a tee marker, McIlroy unlocked a new level. A boomerang throw. You have to watch it to believe it:
Three putt: Scottie had another three-putt at Oakmont. But this one was more baffling than most. He missed the 8-footer for birdie. Then, just watch what happened from two feet.
Class: Robert MacIntyre waited in the scoring arena. But the 64-foot putt was a stab at his U.S. Open dreams. But the young Scot was nothing but classy in his defeat. Look at how he paid Spaun his respects here.
Hatton, too, despite being dejected after his crushing final hole crumble, stopped mid-interview to praise the champ’s final putt. Hovland congratulated Spaun with a smile, calling the putt ‘absolutely filthy’ in awe. Seems like Oakmont brought out both the worst and best in some, huh?

Escaping Wet Sandtraps

Mud balls. Wet rough. Slow greens. Playing a soggy course has its challenges, like Oakmont just showed us! But one thing that doesn’t get nearly enough attention is wet bunkers. So, how do you escape wet sand? Well, you make some adjustments:
Clubface: Keep it square, instead of keeping it open as famed golf instructor Jim McLean advises here. Otherwise, it won’t dig into the sand, and your ball will fly over the fairways to the next bunker.
Downswing: Come down steeper on the ball by putting 65-75% of your weight on the front foot. This way, the club will graze the sand just an inch before the ball.
Speed: Hit it with more clubhead speed than your regular bunker shot. Since you are on wet lie, you will need some extra power to get out of the sandtrap. PGA Professional Tom Blanckaert demonstrates exactly how.
Think steep, more weight on the frontfoot, and more power, and you are good. And if you are worried about mud on your ball, we've got you covered there, too.

Wholesome

The bond between Tiger and Charlie is more of a sibling rivalry than your typical father-son relationship. Which, of course, makes it more wholesome. Then they have similar mannerisms—just watch this side-by-side resemblance in their club twirl, putting, and celebrating. It’s uncanny and beautiful at the same time.
But you know what is more heartwarming? Charlie writing Tiger a note on Father’s Day. The sentiment could make you cry. This one line sums it up: ‘Thank you, dad, for believing in me in times where I didn’t even believe in myself.’ Read it here in full.
