In the early 1920s, a group of Los Angeles Athletic Club members started scouting the Santa Monica area for land to build a golf course. Frank Garbutt, their leader, picked the area where Riviera Country Club now stands. They bought the property for $264,500 (around $4.9 million). It cost around $250,000 to build the course, nearly four times the average cost of a course built at the time.
