Team Europe Calls PGA’s Actions Offensive

Oct 2, 2025 | Edition #206
👋 Hey Golf Fans,
This week, the PGA Tour heads to The Country Club of Jackson for the Sanderson Farms Championship. We'll dissect the course's nuances and the challenge it poses for the pros. Plus, we'll catch up on Matt Fitzpatrick's take on the PGA president's controversial remarks, Tom Watson's knee trick – all in today's edition.
Let’s get swinging…

Tough But Scorable

The Sanderson Farms Championship will tee off this week, and don’t expect a brutal test. Sure, the 12-time host, the Country Club of Jackson, offers a par-72 layout stretching 7,461 yards. Narrow fairways, tree-lined doglegs, and 56 sand bunkers look intimidating, and the 2 ½ inches of zoysia rough add a touch of menace.
Yet… last year told a different story. The scoring average was 69.42, almost three shots under par, despite the fairways being ranked the third hardest on the PGA Tour. With a course rating of 70 and a slope of 113, the challenge is real. But with the 36-hole cut consistently set low – 6-under was the mark in 2024 – players will look to string back-to-back birdies.
Oh, and did we mention the top seven players last year carded 20-under par or better, and a whopping 60 players went 10-under or lower?
You probably missed it, but last year, the tournament leader was pretty angry after a rules fiasco. Just watch his viral argument over an absurd demand here.
Speaking of the players, the World No. 34 Akshay Bhatia is the highest-ranked player in the field. By no means did he have a stellar season, but he recorded top 30 finishes in seven of his last eight outings. He made four top 10s this season, three more than fan favorite Min Woo Lee. Except Lee’s got a win this season, so expect plenty of fanfare.
Most Ryder Cuppers are taking a break, but Rasmus Højgaard, along with assistant captains Francesco Molinari and Brandt Snedeker, are in the mix.
No top-ranked golfers? Don’t worry! Expect plenty of drama and likely another playoff, just like three of the last six events. The Tour is back in full force.

Best Foot Forward
A wayward drive. A poor chip. You’d think it’s always your swing at fault, but sometimes, the culprit is those cheap or worn-out golf balls! They can sap distance, reduce control, and sadly also make good shots deliver mediocre results. Fortunately, that’s not something you’ll have to worry about anymore, thanks to the PGA TOUR Superstore’s limited-time sale of 20% off on premium golf balls.
From Srixon to Bridgestone, oh, and everyone’s favourite Titleist Pro V1s, they’ve a variety of high-quality balls engineered for distance, greenside precision, and consistency. So now, you can get the best results on the course, without breaking your bank!

Official Misstep

The Ryder Cup is over, so allow us to bring your attention to one fact: Bethpage delivered exactly what the Team USA likely hoped for – a raucous New York sports crowd. With that came the hurl of abuse directed at the European members. But what’s appalling is the PGA of America President’s attitude: "It happened when we were in Rome.”
Matt Fitzpatrick, respectfully, took offense to that and said, “It's pretty offensive to European fans the fact that he said that, really.” A sentiment Tyrrell Hatton echoed: “I don't think Rome comes anywhere near that.”
Anyone present on the ground will tell you that's absolutely true. New York fans are never kind. But they have rarely been this brazen-faced and brass-necked. From breaking the cardinal rule of golf (don't shout on downswing or backswing) to hurling abuses at family members, a number of lines were crossed. We present one such moment below that prompted Shane Lowry to almost come and punch the guy in the face:
Furthermore, Matt spoke about the CEO's bitter action during the trophy presentation ceremony. And this video will definitely make you question the PGA of America's true intention.
The PGA of America's acknowledgment – or lack thereof – certainly doesn't exemplify an organization touting "grow the game." Our readers aptly called out the New York fans' behavior yesterday, labeling it "disrespectful," "disgraceful," and "embarrassing." It becomes even more disturbing when you see how Robert MacIntyre was taunted over his appearance. The Scottish golfer actually compiled the worst heckling he received — check it out here.
Fan misconduct was the most talked-about topic during the Ryder Cup, and days later, it still is. The President of the PGA of America may not have witnessed it, but spectators certainly saw how tough the Europeans had it because of the so-called ‘fans.’ And no one’s forgetting it anytime soon.

Tom’s Knee Mechanics

Ever find yourself constantly thinking about how to perfect your game? Well, you’re not alone! And one of the most overlooked building blocks of solid golf fundamentals is knee movement. Luckily, Tom Watson made sure this detail never slipped by. He knew exactly how crucial it was, and how simple it could be to get it right.
Set your sequence: Start your swing by moving your hands, arms, and shoulders. That motion naturally brings your hips and lower body into play. Keep your left knee from moving outward or left of the ball. Let it collapse slightly inward and a bit right of the ball.
Control your hip turn: Ensure your right hip moves back, not slides right. A sliding hip pushes the left knee out, cutting your shoulder turn short and steepening your path.
Train the feel: To stop your right hip from sliding and brace your right knee, place a golf ball under the outside of your right foot at address and keep it there throughout the swing, as Tom demonstrates below:

Fatherhood Glow

A child’s love can truly transform a person. Who would have thought the famously intense Brooks Koepka would ever smile ear to ear alongside someone less than 2 ft tall? Golfing at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship with his son, Crew, the LIV Golfer looked more joyous than he did lifting his second U.S. Open trophy. Just check out Brooks’ parental energy when teaming up with his mini-me after a long practice day.
Of course, Brooks’ moment gave us major déjà vu — remember that Scottie Scheffler and Bennett clip? After winning The Open, watch how Bennett's grand entrance to his dad stole the show. Oh, and did we mention the crowd’s screams? We suspect it might have been one of the few times the one-year-old strutted in front of the cameras.

Some golfers measure success not just in majors but in vintages, creating signature wine labels that blend the game with a taste for the good life. Here’s to those who shine on the course and in the cellar.
Greg Norman: Greg Norman Estates makes standout Australian and Californian wines, including Zinfandel and Reserve Shiraz. Here’s Norman and his daughter ‘celebrating’ their Sauvignon Blanc.
Jack Nicklaus: Launched in 2010 with Terlato, Jack Nicklaus Wines debuted with a 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon and Private Reserve. Check out the collection by yourself here.
Ernie Els: Founded in 1999, Stellenbosch’s Els Label produces five Bordeaux varietals, from Cabernet Sauvignon to Petit Verdot. Take a look at the renowned ‘Big Easy Cabernet Sauvignon 2022.’
Gary Player: Black Knight Wine launched its “Major Championship Series” with the 1959 Muirfield vintage, planning more releases over two decades. The ratings reflect the quality of the vine, like you’ll see here.
Luke Donald: The Luke Donald Collection features Napa Valley Bordeaux-style reds, including the signature LDC Red blend. And like this clip shows you, Donald’s love for wine has no borders.
