That's One Heck of a Feat, Nelly

June 07, 2025 | Edition #148

 👋 Hey Golf Fans,

And… Nelly Korda has reached another career milestone. A first for America, a first for her. More on the World No. 1’s latest achievement today. Along with snippets from the RBC Canadian Open (it was cut day after all), a tip on iron play, and a coach who played golf for 32 hours straight. Let’s tee off...

The First

Nelly Korda has now spent 100 weeks as the World No. 1. Only five other players in the history of the LPGA Tour can boast of the record. And none of them ever represented the Stars and Stripes.

Surprising, right?

There were the likes of Nancy Lopez, Cristie Kerr, Juli Inkster, Paula Creamer, Stacy Lewis, and others. But none dominated the female golf scene for a sustained period as Nelly did in the last one and a half years. Seven wins in a season, matching Lopez with five back-to-back titles, and still relentless.

Nelly’s current streak runs through 63 weeks at the top. And amid all this, she still found time to pose for Sports Illustrated’s Swimsuit edition. You can see ALL her gorgeous shoot looks here.

But…

The ride was anything but an afternoon stroll in Central Park.

In 2023, Korda was in fine form. And then a neck injury derailed her plans. In 2024, she found 6 wins from 7 starts, and then missed three back-to-back cuts. Yet she rose like a phoenix.

And by the looks of it, she will break a few more records as well. Here is what the all-time World No.1 list looks like:

  • Jin Young Ko (163)

  • Lorena Ochoa (158)

  • Lydia Ko (125)

  • Yani Tseng (109)

  • Inbee Park (106)

Park and Tseng are within putting distance. And if Korda nets another win before this month, her place at the top is even more secure, and she’ll likely break inside the top five on the all-time list. Then it’s onto the Kos. Happy chasing, Nelly!

(Un)usual Suspects

The Canadian Open has seen more twists than a pretzel. An unthinkable leader, sure, but the biggest surprise was our latest grand-slammer heading home early! Yes, Rory McIlroy shot 78 in the second round. A few squares on his scorecard were expected, sure.

But then came a quadruple bogey.

At the par-4 fifth, he sailed his approach to no man’s land and couldn't find his ball. Penalty! It then took him another three shots to land on the putting green. It almost seemed as if the Ulsterman wanted to explore every nook and cranny of the hole. Just look at where all he mishit:

If you watched it live, you would've understood where the ball was gonna end up. Because the PGA Tour launched Smart Tracer this week. No fancy gizmo. The Smart Tracer actually has a purpose—the tracking line changes color depending on the quality of the shot, like you’ll see in this case.

After 36 holes, it’s Cameron Champ who leads Canada’s National Open. Champ was, by the way, the eighth alternate in the field. Any normal week, he wouldn’t even get a chance. Today, he’s 2 strokes ahead of the entire field, and 36 holes away from a win.

Regardless…

No one had a better time than this one fan. He showcased some self-launched tech at its finest. The man was beer-thirsty… hands full with two and two in his helmet! It’s best you just see for yourself what we mean!

Justin Rose could’ve needed one of those beers after the round he had (+1). Max Homa, Tom Kim, and debutant Luke Clanton, too. They were all among the many big names heading home early this week. Better luck next week, guys.

Long Shot

Remember that Tiger Woods shot from the 2000 Canadian Open? Nope, not from the bunker. The other one. 234 yards from the out-of-sight pin, Tiger swings his 3-iron. The ball crosses the bunker and stops just a few yards from a hole out! Ever wonder how you can pull off a similar shot? Well, it boils down to proper strategy & a smattering of smartness.

  • Legendary coach, Butch Harmon, suggests this: choose a club with more loft and change the angle of attack to come down behind the ball. Watch him demonstrate below.

  • Don’t miss the green on the side that’s closest to the pin. Aim for the area where you will have a larger wiggle room to work with.

  • Be mindful of the green contours. Check which way the slope is, where the green is fastest, and other qualities. Rick Shiels explains more here.

Now, when you get stuck on 200-yard approach shots, keep these few tips in mind. And the next step? Well, try this:

Golf for a Cause

You thought you were a golf buff? Wait till we introduce you to Isaac Rowlands. This British club pro did something unthinkable. Playing golf for 32 hours. Straight. Without a break. He was in Norway. And right now, the sun never sets there. So he had daylight. But he also had another big motivation.

Fundraising.

A little backstory: Rowlands was 19 when he had a lymphoma. He underwent surgery and was cleared within a year. But the experience stayed with him. He thought of paying back. The marathon round—he walked 53 miles and 120K steps—yielded $8100 in charity. Take a look at his inspiring story here.

You’ve just finished a solid 18—maybe drained a few putts, maybe not—but now it’s time for something just as satisfying: a perfectly cooked steak. And one of these five steakhouses is the best place to go!

  1. Penumbra (Chicago, Illinois): Low-lit, cozy, and full of flavor. It pairs well with a red and a day at one of Chicago’s classic munis. Look at the mouth-watering steaks here.

  2. Hawksmoor (New York City): British roots, NYC flair, and steaks that absolutely melt in your mouth.

  3. Jeffrey’s (Austin, Texas): If your post-round vibes call for dry-aged perfection and next-level service, this is the spot. The vibe is just perfect.

  4. Golden Steer (Las Vegas): Old-school Vegas charm where Sinatra once dined. It’s exactly what you crave after a desert round.

  5. Gwen (Los Angeles): This is a butcher shop and fine-dining experience rolled into one. Watch how beautifully things are done there.
