This Guy Needs to Be on Team USA, Right Keegan?

July 26, 2025 | Edition #175

 👋 Hey Golf Fans,

The 3M Open delivered instant drama as Adam Svensson shattered the tournament record with a bogey-free 60 on Thursday. Meanwhile, across the pond things have been just as dramatic though. 21-year-old Lottie Woad is making waves (again) this time as a pro. Oh, and another pro—someone you’ve never heard of just did something you’ve never heard of! We’ll dig into all of these and more in today’s edition. Let's get swinging...

Debutant

When Nelly Korda praised Lottie Woad on Thursday, saying, “It’s going to be exciting to see where her career goes,” she may not have expected things to be as immediate as they’re turning out.

The 21-year-old turned pro just this week after winning the Women's Irish Open (Jul 6) and finishing at T3, one shot short of a playoff at The Amundi Evian Championship (Jul 13) as an amateur.

Today, she's leading her LPGA debut.

And in style too. She shot a 67 on Thursday, with back-to-back birdies, and even almost holed an ace in her very first round as a pro. Watch here how close she came to a hole-in-one, despite the clearly audible howling wind too! Yesterday, she did even better with a bogey-free 65, birdieing all four par-5s on the course, and three more!

Woad now has a two-stroke lead over the next best in the field at Dundonald Links… who, in this case, turns out to be the best in the world! Nelly Korda and Denmark's Koerstz Madsen, both at T2 (-10), will come into moving day chasing down the debutant.

Conversely, multiple big names from the women’s side missed the cut, too. Maja Stark (77 & 73), Anna Nordqvist (76 & 73), and even the latest major winner, Grace Kim (73 & 76), too.

What happened with Charlotte Laffar moreover also shows how good Lottie has been. Laffar, on Thursday shot a 66. She missed the cut yesterday after an 82! So you see, it’s not an easy course to keep consistent at, and yet the youngster has only improved since her first round. Can she continue too, though, over the next 36 holes?

Only time will tell.

Sleeper Pick

Earlier this week, Keegan Bradley told SI this: "Bryson is going to be a very important piece to us winning the Ryder Cup." So does that mean his team set? Because DeChambeau has not yet made the automatic qualifiers.

But then again, this secret conversation that the LIV star revealed to the media last week makes it seem like Bradley’s already confirmed things with him. Regardless, though, we’re not here to talk about Bryson. We’re here to tell Keegan that if his picks are set, may need to reconsider one.

Because right now, he may be missing the hottest American golfer! Chris Gotterup.

The 26-year-old American has been on fire lately. He’s jumped 19 spots (from 31 to 22) in the Ryder Cup standings in the past few weeks. On Sunday, he grabbed a solo 3rd place finish at the Open Championship. A week before that, Chris won the Scottish Open, beating Rory in a head-to-head.

He even shattered the course record there with this incredible shot. Watch it here and tell us Bradley doesn’t need him in his squad!

That’s not all that makes him worthy, though.

Gotterup’s turnaround has been incredible. From eight missed cuts in his first 12 events, he’s since gone on to place in the top-25 in all the remaining, except three (T26, T28, and 1MC).

As per a few major winners and experts, he’s now a no-brainer pick. Just look at this Masters winner publicly call for it too.

Here’s another thing Bradley should notice: Gotterup has led after 54 holes twice in his career and won both times. When officials put him on the clock during his Scottish Open victory, drawing boos from McIlroy's crowd, he responded with clutch up-and-downs to close it out.

That's precisely what Bethpage will demand. Performance under pressure. And composure. And this youngster has plenty of it.

Do You Think Gotterup Has Done Enough for a Captain's Pick?

Low Point Control

Ever wonder why your iron shots feel inconsistent? One day you're compressing the ball like a pro, and the next you're chunking it into the fringe. Well, the secret isn't in your swing speed or club selection… it's controlling where your club hits the ground!

You see, ‘low point control’ affects every club and shot (see how exactly here) because your clubhead moves in a circle, reaching its lowest point and then travels back up. So controlling this determines solid contact. And here's one of the simplest ways to do it:

  • Setup: Place an alignment stick on the ground (if you don’t have one, you can just use two tees too, like this) and your ball slightly in front of it. Keep most of your weight on your lead foot at address.

  • Strike Sequence: Now, hit the ball, and make sure your club does not come in contact with the stick. If it does, adjust your swing and try again. The goal is for your club to miss the stick by millimeters and strike only the ball.

  • Listen for Feedback: You'll hear crisp ball-first contact when you do it right, and of course you’ll see your shot fly further too. That's proper compression.

Once you're consistently hitting without touching the stick, you've developed reliable low point control, which means lower scores too. And if you think you have that handled, here are some more easy drills for you to try.

One in a Trillion

Impossible.

That’s how anyone would describe what just happened earlier this week to Cam Starr, a mini-tour player who was eight days away from quitting pro golf to start a new job.

Starr is good friends with Ryan Gerard (the PGA Tour’s latest winner) and on Sunday, the two headed to TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas to celebrate Gerard’s win… and play for possibly the last time before Starr quit. And then it happened.

An ace… but on the par-4 15th, so an albatross. 6 million in one chance!

Soon enough, there was another miracle. At the par-5 3rd after another perfect drive, he hit it with his wedge for his second shot, and lo—a hole out.

Another albatross!

We're talking about 1-in-1 trillion odds here. Whether he’ll still quit or not is still one question, we don’t have an answer to. But the way they planned to celebrate, as you can read about here, may give you an idea!
