Tour Champ's World No.1 Prophecy Proven True. But on Nelly.

June 02, 2025 | Edition #146

 👋 Hey Golf Fans,

On Saturday, Ben Griffin said, ‘No.1 can be beat.’ He was chasing Scottie again. But on Sunday, it was the other World No.1 who got jinxed. Maja Stark went on to win the US Women’s Open, defeating Nelly Korda by two strokes. Scheffler, on the other hand, did what he does best—blew out the field. More on them in today’s newsletter, along with some expert tips on green reading. Let’s get swinging…

Erin Hills Bulletin

Maja Stark outlasted the World No.1, Nelly Korda, and Japanese pro Rio Takeda to net her first career major at Erin Hills. She finished even par on Sunday, comfortably walking away with a two-stroke victory.

The Swede was steady with her flatstick, while the World No.1 faltered and slipped out of contention. On the par-3 thirteenth, Korda, who carded 1-under 71, missed a six-footer for par. She was outside the top 40 in SG: Putting for the entire week, leaking four shots on the greens.

Stark, meanwhile, surged ahead on the back nine, virtually playing mistake-free golf all day, en route to her second victory on the LPGA Tour. She was quite some distance from her old ‘temper tantrum’ days. The Oklahoma grad was notorious for her on-course outbursts—you know, club-throwing, smashing, etc. She wanted to rein those in.

Having a former stand-up comedian as a caddie somewhat helps.

Yesterday, her looper, Jeff Brighton, kept her in a jovial mood throughout the round. Like wearing a cheesehead as you can see here—yeah, a nod to the Green Bay Packers fans. When in Wisconsin, do what the Cheeseheads do.

Motivation also came from her predecessors. Stark is the third Swede after Annika Sorenstam (2006) and Liselotte Neumann (1988) to lift the Harton S. Semple Trophy. On Saturday, both texted Stark saying, ‘Bring it home.’ She did.

As for Nelly, she netted her best US Women’s Open place–a T2. Her ‘complicated’ relationship with the National Open will continue. The World No.1 was gracious as ever in defeat, still. She stayed back, signed autographs for kids, and posed for selfies.

No champagne shower for Korda, yes. But she was showered with love.

Elite Company

Well, what do we have here? Yes. Scottie Scheffler winning. Again. Thrice in his last four tournaments. Yesterday, the World No.1 shot 70 in the final round to win by four strokes.

Jack Nicklaus himself thinks Scottie is playing BETTER than even he did in his prime. Yes, he said that (and more) here! These stats will probably tell you why the Golden Bear thinks so. Scheffler has now:

  • Joined Tiger as the only person to defend his Memorial title.

  • Three successful title defenses just behind Phil (5) and Tiger (23).

  • Converted 11 of 17 times he held at least a share of a 54-hole lead.

  • Win rate of 22.7% since his first victory on Tour.

  • Pocketed around $10M in the last 30 days.

Scheffler’s caddie, Ted Scott, knows he will out-earn a bunch of PGA Tour pros this season as well. Look at him dancing his heart out to the hip-hop hit ‘Can’t Be Touched’ here. But for the World No.1, the money, the fame, and the greatness all pale before the family.

The first thing he did after winning? Scottie went to pick up Bennett from Meredith’s lap. It came the warning from mom, though: ‘He has poop all over his back, sorry’. Just watch what Scheffler said (and did) in response to that:

Griffin had the fire of a true athlete when he boldly declared he would try and beat Scheffler. Had things been different, maybe he would’ve had a shot. Sadly, Sunday was not his day.

In fact, this Hot Mic moment caught live on camera from yesterday pretty much summed up his week. He ended the event 4 strokes behind Scheffler.

But don’t worry, Ben, it’s not you. It’s been 9 times now that Scottie started Sunday with a solo lead. He’s never lost! (knock on wood)

Putting to Perfection

The US Women’s Open title was decided on the putting green—that’s what made all the difference between Stark and the rest of the field. This massive bridie she made on Sunday proves that. Erin Hills was fast, and most players suffered horribly (probably just like you and we do every weekend). Here is how to avoid that:

  • Read your putts from 20 feet behind the ball. If you read too close to the ball, you miss out on the nuances—the high and low points—of the green.

  • After that, circle the entire area in and around your ball. Walk to the low side of the putt as well, to gain a better understanding of the slope.

  • Tiger Woods used to put two tees outside the heel and toe. His then-coach Butch Harmon explained, as you’ll see here, how it helps to keep a square face of the putter.

The above tips and the drill will help you become a better putter and lower your handicap. But if you take things even further, here’s some advice from one of the most legendary players (especially on the greens).

Lexi Thompson is fuming over her recent slow-play accusations. ‘Get all the facts right,’ she yells, clearing the air.

Jack Nicklaus reveals the shocking story he’ll ‘never forget’ where he broke one of his most prized possessions.

Rory McIlroy is finally doing it. 2 weeks after his entire ‘illegal driver’ fiasco, he’s now ready to face the music.

Dire Straits

The other day, three of us went to our local muni. Booked an early morning tee time, hoping to catch a calm and serene environment. The plan was to play in a threesome, but we saw one stranger going ‘lonesome’, so we invited him to join us. You’ve probably guessed where this is going—yeah, we regretted it. Anyway, we thought getting unsolicited advice (most of which doesn’t make sense) from random strangers was the worst that could happen.

But we were wrong.

This user on Reddit had it worse. In their defense, they didn’t make the cardinal mistake of asking a stranger to join them. But this couple got paired with two random dudes. Nice guys. Happy, laughing. Until something snapped, and by the 18th hole, they found another group to pick a fight with. Result? Worse than you would expect!

Unwritten etiquette direly needed to be codified, folks.

Okay, picture this—you’re standing on the tee, breeze in your face, waves crashing in the background, and the only thing more beautiful than your drive (hopefully) is the view. If that sounds like your kind of round, these are 5 ocean-view golf courses in America you need to play at least once!

  1. Pebble Beach Golf Links: Just look at this beauty. The crown jewel. Legendary layout, and waves crashing on the cliffs. A front-row seat to golf heaven!

  2. Harbour Town Golf Links: That iconic lighthouse finish and Lowcountry charm make this one a must-play coastal gem.

  3. Bandon Dunes Golf Resort: Raw, rugged, and utterly breathtaking, like you’ll see here. Every hole feels like it was carved by nature itself.

  4. The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island: Host of multiple majors, and home to one of the most jaw-dropping views in the game.

  5. Whistling Straits: Perched along Lake Michigan, it feels like the ocean and plays like a true links beast. Dawn and dusk hit differently, too.
