Gene Sarazen was born on February 27, 1902, in Harrison, New York. He almost died of pneumonia as a child, and doctors recommended an outdoors lifestyle. That’s how he took up golf. He won the first major at the 1922 U.S. Open and completed the career Grand Slam in 1934 by winning the Masters. The Grand Slammer is widely credited with being the “inventor” of the modern-day sand wedge. He passed away on May 13, 1997, from pneumonia.
