Tour's 'Pillow Fight' Finally Has a Winner

June 09, 2025 | Edition #149

 👋 Hey Golf Fans,

Imagine firing 62 in the final round, moving up 14 spots to take the clear lead, waiting 2 hours for the rest of the field to finish. And still losing the title, because of this crushing lipout. Golf at its cruelest (or, finest), you could say. More from the RBC Canadian Open final round in today’s edition. Along with some bold (and audacious) US Open predictions, some fairway wood tips, and the great American deer story.

A Slow Burn

When Sam Burns shot 62, the clock showed 4:02 PM. Burns waited two anxious hours, watching a bunch of players trying to catch him and come up short. In the end, though, he was caught.

And hunted down.

Ryan Fox sank his birdie putt on the 72nd hole to match Burns at 18-under 262. The Kiwi and the American headed for a sudden-death playoff on the very same hole. Both made par in their first attempt. A walk back to the 18th tee. Par again.

Off they went for the third time. The pin location was changed to spice things up a bit. But Burns and Fox were tangled in a knot—both missed birdie attempts. Inside the booth, Trevor Immelman gasped: “This is turning into a pillow fight.” Fox would agree afterwards.

Then came the fourth attempt. Fox’s drive left him 269 yards from the pin. He took out his 3-wood, took barely six seconds before launching it high. The ball landed 9 feet from the pin. Shot of his career, the Kiwi later said (more on it later). Burns went on to settle for par. Fox birdied.

It was a win worthy of celebrations on a beach! Both his daughters, though, on Sunday evening, did the next best thing. They headed into a bunker. Ran along the sand. Tossed it in the air. Basically (and adorably), they turned TPC Toronto their own sandy shore. Watch the adorable moment here, and Fox apologizing profusely on their behalf!

A second PGA Tour title. A spot at the US Open. It’s definitely worth a post-event bunker rake. Right, Ryan?

Oakmont Predictions

It's another major week, which means some major predictions (again). Bold, brash, and audacious. Let’s first start with the records that we think CAN’T be broken. The youngest champion of the tournament is John McDermott. That was when? Yes, 1911. McDermott was 19 years, nine months, 14 days.

For the record, we have a 17-year-old high-schooler named Mason Howell in this year’s field, making 18 birdies during the US Open qualifier. But he has to beat the likes of Bryson, Scottie, Rory, Xander… Unlikely.

Then there’s the oldest. Presently, Hale Irwin, who won in 1990, at 45 years and 15 days old, still holds the record at the U.S. Open. And if our money were on anyone to break that, it’d be Phil.

Lefty would have to break his own oldest-ever major winner record to do so. And complete his own Grand Slam. But that’s very unlikely… even though he still has the chops. Just watch him hole out with this unreal shot–a 180-degree flop shot from the lip of the bunker yesterday!

So yes, even though we love Phil, winning the ‘toughest’ major at the age of 54? Most likely in his last US Open? We predict that Irwin still holds the record come Sunday.

Speaking of Sunday, we don’t see Rory winning. As we write this, Rory is likely still experimenting with some new gear. At least that’s what he said he would do here. We don’t think it’ll be in-form Bryson either. Because there’s just one name on everyone’s breath right now.

Scottie Scheffler.

The Dallas man will be the man to beat. And he looks like he is unbeatable at this moment. But can he best Tiger’s record of 15-shot margin? Well. That happens only once in a lifetime!

Fairway Woods Basics

So yes, back to that Ryan Fox shot we mentioned earlier—you can watch the beauty here. Fox utilized power, a perfect setup, and executed ‘the best shot he ever hit’ with perfect accuracy. And we broke it down. So when you’re faced with similar shots, here is what you should do:

  • Bend your chest over your toes so that it enables your hands to hang straight down, relax your legs, and there you have the perfect setup.

  • Keep the ball in the forward stance and on your downswing, hit slightly down on the ball, as legendary golf coach Martin Hall explains in this tutorial.

  • Don’t be afraid to be aggressive if that’s your natural game. That’s what Justin Thomas did here, and it won him the Wanamaker in 2022.

Enough about tips; what about picking the right fairway wood? We can help with that, too. Here you go:

Lydia Ko finds support from LPGA legend and ‘big sister’ after a heartbreaking loss just days before.

A Deer in the Limelight

Lots of wildlife delays lately. A few days ago, turtles interrupted play at the PGA Championship. One even almost got whacked with a ball, as you can see here. Then there was also a snake that caused a delay a few days later. And now we have… a sprinting deer. Not kidding, no.

The final round of the LIV Golf Virginia had a deer running across the greens.

It left hoof marks on the green and the fairway as baffled spectators couldn’t process what just unfolded in front of their eyes. Just watch it dart across the course here, you’d probably react the same way too, huh? Fortunately, the greens were ‘repaired’ soon after, and Joquain Niemann went on to net his fourth title of the season!

There’s something about kicking back with a good whiskey after a round, especially when the sun’s low, your scorecard’s decent, and you’re surrounded by good company! So the next time that happens, here are some classic brands to try.

  1. Jack Daniel’s: The OG. Smooth, bold, and unmistakably American. It gives classic a whole new meaning. After all, watch here how it has been made the same way for over 2 centuries.

  2. Jim Beam: A staple in any bar for a reason. Easygoing and reliable, it’s bourbon that never pretends to be something it’s not.

  3. Wild Turkey: Strong, spicy, and full of character. It's great neat, on the rocks, or with a cigar. And like you’ll see here, its bottles are collectible worthy too.

  4. Bulleit Bourbon: Known for its high-rye content and bold bite, this one’s perfect for folks who like their whiskey with a little edge.

  5. Woodford Reserve: Smooth, rich, and refined. It’s ideal for sipping slowly and chatting about your best rounds. You must check out its latest bourbon.
