And just like the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale, the AIG Women’s Open came down to the wire. Shiho Kuwaki, 23, barged in, going bogey-free in her last 13 holes to set the clubhouse target at 5-under. Meanwhile, Germany’s Esther Henseleit made a late charge and drained a monster birdie putt on the 18th to tie with Kuwaki. A playoff ensued.
From the 18th tee, Kuwaki’s drive landed in the fescue, forcing her to lay up on the fairway. Henseleit’s perfect drive and beautiful approach offered her a birdie chance, but she failed to convert. Both saved par and headed back to the 18th tee.
This time, Henseleit’s drive ricocheted off a spectator and got stuck in a bush. Kuwaki was flawless. Her drive set up a safe approach shot, and she saved par while Henseleit bogeyed. Kuwaki became the latest major winner and the second Japanese pro to win a major this season.
