Fred Herd

On November 26, 1873, Fred Herd, the winner of the first 72-hole U.S. Open, was born. Herd was known only for his lone major triumph (1898 U.S. Open) and wild tales of alcohol addiction. It is said that the USGA asked him to pay a deposit due to concerns he might pawn the trophy for alcohol. Despite his reputation, Herd lived to the age of 80, passing away in 1954.
