World’s Best Brace for Nature’s Worst

Feb 12, 2026 | Edition #262

 👋 Hey Golf Fans,

A key tenet of Charles Darwin’s theory of survival of the fittest is adaptability. The species that can adapt to the demands of its environment outlives others. On National Darwin Day, it’s good to keep that in the back of your mind when you tune in to the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. We caught an early glimpse of how tough the battle of survival against wild winds will be this week, and let’s just say it’s gonna be brutal.

Onward…

Force of Nature

The PGA Tour’s best are ready to tee off at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. And they are faced with a familiar enemy: roaring ocean gusts. Yesterday, Emiliano Grillo made an insane backward flop shot facing toward the ocean on the 7th hole. The water took the ball. The wind flung it backward and dropped it near Grillo’s feet. Guess where the ball ended up?

It’s gonna be fun watching the world’s best battling the elements. Rory McIlroy returns to defend his title. The World No. 2 was spotted on the 18th green yesterday—he made an eagle and celebrated like he won the Masters again.

Scottie Scheffler was playing a practice round with Si Woo Kim. The World No. 1 pulled off the unimaginable at last week’s WM Phoenix Open, surging from his worst round in two years to a T3 finish. Enough said.

Tommy Fleetwood also makes his season debut. Traditionally, Pebble Beach favors accuracy over brute force, and Fleetwood reached 65.37% of fairways last year. Meanwhile, Viktor Hovland is coming after a hot stretch of golf—only two finishes outside the top ten in seven starts. So the 80-player field in Tour’s first signature event of the season looks promising.

Course: The first two rounds will alternate between the Pebble Beach Golf Links and Spyglass Hill, with the final two rounds played in the former. Pebble's tiny (averaging 3,500 sq. ft.) elevated poa annua greens are undulating, wickedly sloped, and heavily bunkered. It demands great approach play. Here is a quick snapshot of Pebble Beach and Spyglass Hill, respectively:

Twists

Ace (or not?): Neal Shipley turned heads on his TGL debut by making the first ace in the league's history. Look at the astonishing trajectory of the ball after it dropped—do you think this would’ve been possible on real grass?

And that’s why Shipley was asked if it should be counted as a career hole-in-one. “100%,” said the youngster, before his confidence dipped slowly. Notice the reluctance at the end of these 17 seconds of awkwardness. Reminds you of something? Yeah, this strange interaction between Shipley and a journalist from the 2024 Masters.

Welcome: Patrick Reed’s 11th-hour exit from LIV created trouble for Dustin Johnson’s 4Aces GC. Needing a replacement, DJ turned to Anthony Kim, who will now be playing as a full-time 4Aces member. It figures, given that DJ was the one who convinced Greg Norman to sign Kim and helped him catch up with everything he missed during the 12-year absence. In case you’re wondering whether AK’s game is still sharp, this shot will erase all your doubts. After the first round at LIV Adelaide, DJ and AK are tied for third.

In other news:

📺 WM Phoenix Open notched its highest final-round viewership in seven years, surging 32% from last year to a peak of 4.926M viewers. As for LIV Golf Riyadh, well, take a guess how far behind they are.

🤡 Nevertheless, LIV still launched a campaign ridiculing the PGA Tour’s “bid” for a fifth major.

🔍 Speaking of majors, Rory finally unveiled the mystery of his missing 7-iron after the 2025 Masters.

Gaffe

Topping shots is frustrating and ego-bruising, even for pros like Rory McIlroy—watch him top his ball straight into the water. Here's the root cause and how to avoid a similar fate.

  • On your downswing, your spine goes up, and your body straightens up. So, the bottom part of your clubface makes contact with the top of the ball, as was the case with Bryson DeChambeau today.

  • To avoid that, distribute weight equally between your legs at address. Excessive lateral shift to the right results in excessive body sway. Your weight should ideally move in the direction of your swing, as Butch Harmon demonstrates below.

Remember to place the ball in the center for irons. Move it forward progressively for longer clubs like fairway woods or a driver. Once you’ve fixed this, check below to see if you are making any of these three mistakes.

Cherub Tips

Okay. Grab your club. Set up however you want. Keep your eyes on the ball. Glance at the target a couple of times—quickly, like you’re Brian Harman but in a hurry. Turn your body naturally, club over the trail shoulder. Keep the face a bit open or closed, because who cares? Smash it, then pose for a pic. Classic.

If this sounds like the tips of a toddler, that’s because they are. At the WM Phoenix Open, Scottie Scheffler’s son, Bennett, grabbed everyone’s attention with his elite plastic club swing. Thanks to Mark Immelman, now we’ve the most adorable swing analysis on the internet — check it out here.

All that’s left is a tip of his cap. No wonder Scottie couldn’t stop talking about that peculiar head movement of his son. In case you are a sucker for this kind of swing analysis, here is one more for you. Watch now and thank us later.
