Xander’s Magic Number Resets to Zero

Jan 31, 2026 | Edition #257

 👋 Hey Golf Fans,

11 years ago on this very same day, 17-year-old Lydia Ko became the youngest golfer, man or woman, to reach world No. 1. Ko, now an LPGA Hall of Famer, is teeing off at the HGV Tournament of Champions this week. On the other hand, Xander just suffered his first heartbreak of the season. He tried to laugh it off, but his error handed Scottie another step toward history. Meanwhile, the DP World Tour sees low scores, Reed has a curious cap, and the PGA Tour bent the rules yet again.

Let’s get started…

Eventful

Xander Schauffele’s remarkable consistency gets eclipsed by Scottie Scheffler. But Schauffele actually held the longest active made cut streak on the PGA Tour. In fact, he was second only to Tiger Woods (142) in the all-time list of making consecutive cuts. That’s why Xander packing his bags early this weekend was a shocker. It broke his jaw-dropping streak — guess how many days it spanned (Hint: It’s over 1000).

It was not for a lack of trying, which is probably why he could still joke about it afterwards.

It's going to be nice to have the weekend off. Going to go home and relax and regroup.

Schauffele was trying to rebound from his opening round of 1-over 73. On Friday, he started with two birdies on the back nine. After saving par on the next seven holes, Schauffele rattled off three birdies in the first four holes of his inward nine.

But two scruffy bogeys on the 2nd and 7th nudged him one stroke outside the cut line. Xander saved par on 8th but couldn’t get up and down for birdie on 9th after flying his second just over the green. He finished the day with 69, missing out by just one shot. Scottie Scheffler now holds the active lead of consecutive made-cuts (65).

Bigger Picture: The other big names to miss the cut are Ludvig Aberg (78-72), Billy Horschel (74-75), Marco Penge (75-73), Neal Shipley (76-71), and Max Homa (75-70). Justin Rose leads by four shots after rounds of 62-65. Seamus Power lurks in solo second with Friday's 66. Joel Dahmen and Max McGreevy tie for third at 11-under.

Make your hearing health a priority

Hearing health isn’t just about sounds—it’s closely tied to memory, focus, and long-term cognitive wellness. Waiting until things feel “bad enough” can mean missing an opportunity to stay proactive.

Brilliance

Mysterious: Golf might be a gentleman’s sport, but it still has to make fans feel something. And Patrick Reed does that in a way your average milquetoast pros can’t. Even if you hand them a script. For example, look at him racing against his brother-in-law across the golf course after making a hole-in-one.

Nevertheless, Reed finds himself in an interesting situation now. He can’t wear LIV apparel anymore. But Reed might have found a new sponsor already. Check out the cap he is wearing at the Bahrain Championship (it has a hefty price tag and a big name behind it, too).

Adjustment: Before Brooks Koepka teed off at Torrey Pines, a reporter subtly reminded him of his recent major record (three missed cuts and a T12). Koepka took it like a good sport—watch the amusing banter between him and the journalist here. The five-time major champ struggled but safely made the cut (T58). He will tee off at the WM Phoenix Open next week. That once again forced the Tour to tweak certain regulations, as you will see here.

Risky: The Bahrain Championship is showering 60s like confetti. Leader Calum Hill matched the Royal Club's course record with an 11-under 61 in the second round, grabbing a four-shot edge. Freddy Schott (67-65) is following him closely, being three clear of Ugo Coussaud (67-68). 11 players were tied for 4th, including Sergio Garcia (70-66), who is playing on a sponsor exemption. Garcia made seven birdies in nine holes to jump from the brink of the cutline to T4. Despite all this, it was Pablo Larrazábal's (T91) gutsy recovery that stuck with us. This shot is a miracle.

Consistency

Plenty of weekend warriors grind on the range with no setup guide in sight. On the other hand, golfers like Nelly Korda come up with unique drills—watch her practice with TWO golf balls. Here is why she does it and why you should try this too.

  1. Put a second ball on the ground directly behind the first one. Place your clubhead between the two.

  2. Now, take the club away as you do at the start of your backswing and notice how the second ball rolls. Ideally, it should roll back in a straight line.

  3. If the second ball rolls too far inside, your takeaway is inside; if too far outside, your takeaway is outside. Watch carefully how top golf coach Michael Mitnick demonstrates the drill below.

Remember, the first three feet of your backswing are crucial, and this drill ensures you’re always on plane during your takeaway. And if you want to break away from the maddening routine of shooting 80s, try these other drills from major champs on the range.

Surprise!

We often hear about the great afflictions of Tour pros being the only ones to suffer the headache of traveling with their golf bags. The truth is, it’s just as likely to happen to, well, you. If it does happen, the first step is to check what’s been left behind. Consider the case of a fellow golfer. After flying from Phoenix to San Diego, he realized his bag was ripped.

He shrugged it off, showed up at the course the next day, and discovered airport security had added a club in his bag. Just not the kind of club you use on a golf course. But a guy had it worse. In fact, his bag looked like it had been run over by a bunch of hippos. This will make you boil with rage.
